Duffy’s Bond with Twin Sister After Kidnapping Ordeal

Welsh singer Duffy captivated audiences with her soulful pop music in the early 2000s, only to vanish from the spotlight in 2011 after securing a Grammy and several BRIT Awards. She resurfaced a decade later, sharing a traumatic kidnapping experience that will feature in an upcoming Disney+ documentary.

Early Life in Coastal Wales

Duffy, born Aimee Ann Duffy on June 23, 1984, in the coastal town of Nefyn on the Llyn Peninsula, grew up alongside her twin sister, Katy Ann Duffy, and older sister Kelly. Their parents, factory worker Joyce and storeman Allan Evans, divorced when Duffy was 10. She then moved to Pembrokeshire with her mother and sisters before returning to Nefyn to live with her father amid challenging family circumstances.

Duffy recounted leaving her family to forge her own path: “We were living with four stepbrothers and sisters and an uncle. After a few years, I decided I needed to find my own path in life and moved out – leaving all my friends, my sisters and my mum behind. You don’t make that sort of decision without knowing what you want to do with your life.”

Reflecting on her childhood, Duffy described it fondly: “I was born in a very small community, no cinema, no clothes, no record shop, youth club or cinema, but life was simple and beautiful. It felt so safe. My grandma lived across the road, the ice-cream van came in the evening, it was wonderful. When you look back at your childhood, only the positive remains. Maybe I romanticise it – my sister has said I’m a very half-full sort of person, but I think that’s probably a better way to be.”

Rebellious Teenage Years

During her turbulent teens, Duffy ran away from home and engaged in wild escapades, including body-piercing, 48-hour beach binges, stealing boats while intoxicated, and hitching rides on milk floats. Despite these adventures, she completed her A-levels, briefly attended Chester University, then dropped out to work as a waitress while composing her breakthrough songs.

After appearing on the Welsh version of The X Factor, Wawffactor, she signed a major record deal in 2007, launching her career with hits like “Mercy.”

Supporting Her Twin Sister

In 2013, Duffy invited her twin sister to share her London flat, helping her navigate the demands of stardom. The sisters, now both 41, maintain a close but private relationship.

Kidnapping and Recovery

In 2020, Duffy broke her decade-long social media silence with a harrowing account of her ordeal abroad. She wrote: “The truth is, and please trust me, I am okay and safe now. I was raped, drugged and held captive for some days. Of course, I survived.”

She continued: “In the aftermath, I would not see someone, a physical soul, for sometimes weeks and weeks and weeks at a time, remaining alone. Rape stripped me of my human rights to experience a life with autonomy from fear. It has already stolen one-third of my life. But I can tell you in the last decade, the thousands and thousands of days I committed to wanting to feel the sunshine in my heart again, the sun does now shine.”
