Shoppers and sellers on eBay faced major disruptions over the weekend as key parts of the online auction platform experienced outages. The issues started Sunday afternoon and persisted through Monday, with full service appearing restored by Tuesday morning, though some users reported lingering problems.
Timeline of the Disruption
The outage kicked off around 3:30 p.m. Sunday, according to user reports tracked by Downdetector. Complaints surged into the evening, peaking at over 1,300 reports 10:30 p.m. before dropping significantly within an hour.
eBay’s Response
An eBay spokesperson acknowledged the problems, stating: “We’re aware that some customers have been experiencing intermittent technical issues since Sunday afternoon on parts of the eBay platform. Our teams are actively working to restore full functionality as quickly as possible. We appreciate our customers’ patience as we work to resolve this.”
The company has not disclosed the root cause of the outage.
Impact on Sellers and Buyers
Sellers relying on eBay for their operations faced significant hurdles. Many reported inability to access the site’s API, preventing them from listing products. One seller vented: “It’s been nearly 6 hours since the API went down, and we have no word from support.”
Buyers also struggled, with some unable to complete payments for purchased items.
Hacktivist Group Claims Responsibility
The Iran-linked hacktivist group 313 Team claimed on social media that it orchestrated the outage through a targeted attack on eBay. This assertion remains unverified. The group has previously taken credit for disruptions, including assaults on Bluesky and Kuwaiti government infrastructure during heightened U.S.-Iran tensions.
