Ellie Goulding pushed through severe food poisoning to perform at Coachella, highlighting her dedication to her craft even under dire circumstances. The singer shared details of the ordeal, emphasizing how she refused to let illness derail her appearance at the renowned music festival.
Challenging Performance Amid Illness
During one year at Coachella, Goulding battled intense food poisoning but took the stage regardless. ‘I was literally shitting my pants, and I still went,’ she recounted. She described wearing leather shorts with zips on the back and front, which she deemed the worst choice for her condition at the time.
The illness stemmed from a trip to South America, where she performed alongside Lorde. Goulding recalled sharing a meal with the artist, specifically a wrap that triggered the problem. ‘I had some kind of wrap, and it all went wrong,’ she explained. She noted that support systems in the industry have improved since then, with better measures now in place to protect artists’ well-being.
Navigating the Pressures of Early Fame
Goulding reflected on the intense demands of her rising music career, which began from humble beginnings. Raised in a working-class family, she initially saw music as a hobby before leaving college to pursue it professionally. Her debut album arrived in 2010, followed by tours with major artists like Bruno Mars and Katy Perry.
The rapid transition to stardom proved overwhelming. ‘I went from never taking a flight, never being photographed, to singing at the royal wedding,’ she said. This stark contrast between her old and new life left her unprepared for the scrutiny, attention, and relentless workload. ‘I don’t think my body knew how to process it, and I wasn’t equipped to deal with that amount,’ Goulding admitted.
Her physical health suffered as a result, with frequent illnesses like tonsillitis rendering her throat unusable at times. ‘My body physically couldn’t function well,’ she shared. Without adequate support back then, she often powered through, but this led to necessary cancellations of key performances.
Goulding faced backlash for pulling out of events, including a major awards show. Organizers warned of severe repercussions, even implying she might never perform there again. ‘What do you want me to do? Do you want me to die?’ she responded defiantly. Such experiences underscored the high stakes and lack of empathy in the industry during her early years.
