Actress Emily Weir, known for her role on the long-running Australian soap opera Home and Away, has shared her experience with sobriety, revealing that abstaining from alcohol has been a transformative decision in managing her inner struggles. Weir has been alcohol-free for eight years, having made the significant choice to quit drinking in 2018.
Battling Anxiety and Finding Sobriety
Weir, 34, disclosed in an interview with Stellar magazine that she previously used alcohol as a way to cope with intense anxiety. This reliance led her to make the pivotal decision to stop drinking, a choice that has profoundly reshaped her life. She has actively maintained her sobriety, finding support through a 12-step program which she joined four years ago.
Reflecting on the process of recovery and personal growth, Weir stated, “Sometimes things have to break in order to be rebuilt.” She elaborated on shedding outdated self-perceptions and societal expectations, particularly those concerning women and actresses. “These ideas we have about ourselves – and what a woman should be and how an actress should be – these are old, old ideas. They have to break in order to birth something new,” she explained.
Shifting Attitudes Towards Alcohol and Mental Health
The actress observed a noticeable shift in societal attitudes towards alcohol and mental health since she began her sobriety journey. She believes the growing “sober curious” movement has played a role in demystifying addiction and reducing the stigma associated with mental health challenges. “We’re more aware of mental illness… there seems to be less shame,” Weir commented.
Weir emphasized the importance of open dialogue, stating, “I’m a big believer that silence, in regard to addiction and mental health, is something that fuels it. When you can talk about it and be honest and vulnerable about it, there’s healing in that.” While acknowledging that not everyone is comfortable sharing their personal battles, she expressed hope that her own story could offer encouragement to others.
“I feel comfortable in sharing it, not to flaunt it, but to give hope that you can live a really amazing life on the other side of anything,” she said.
Career Milestones and Character Portrayals
Remarkably, about six months after giving up alcohol, Weir secured the role of Mackenzie Booth on Home and Away, joining the cast in 2019. Her character has since been involved in numerous emotionally charged storylines, including themes of infertility and pregnancy loss. Weir was drawn to the show’s willingness to address such sensitive topics, noting that discussions around fertility often remain taboo in many family settings.
“I don’t think we’re fully out of the woods with that, especially where a lot of our show reaches,” she commented regarding the ongoing need for open conversations about fertility.
Although Weir is not a parent herself, the fertility storylines resonated deeply due to the experiences of women close to her. “Many women in my circle have had to go through IVF, the loss of fallopian tubes or an array of fertility issues. I’ve been present in that experience with them over the years,” she shared.
Personal Growth and Embracing Authenticity
Beyond her professional life, Weir also spoke about the significance of surrounding herself with genuine people. She credited several more experienced female colleagues for their guidance in shaping her career and personal outlook. Originally from Brisbane, Weir admitted that she nearly abandoned acting as a teenager, feeling that being a “theatre kid wasn’t cool.” After traveling abroad post-school, she returned home to pursue her acting ambitions, eventually achieving a childhood dream by joining Home and Away.
Weir reflected on the valuable lessons learned over time, highlighting her evolution from a people-pleaser to someone who champions authenticity and boundaries. “It’s important to break this idea of perfectionism,” she stated. “It’s about having agency and autonomy. Those things are possible when people get authentic.” The pain stemming from her parents’ divorce in her early twenties had previously led her to alcohol as a coping mechanism, but she successfully achieved sobriety before her casting on the popular drama.
