The UK leads the world by rolling out the first gonorrhoea vaccine. Trials demonstrate this breakthrough reduces infection risk by over 50%, marking a key advance in sexual health amid diagnoses that have more than doubled over the past decade and hit record levels in 2023.
Certain areas face heightened need for this vaccine. Analysis of NHS data identifies England’s top gonorrhoea hotspots, with the City of Westminster posting the highest rate at 749 cases per 100,000 people in 2024.
England’s Leading Gonorrhoea Hotspots
Westminster, home to 211,500 residents, reports 1,586 total cases. The area hosts a major STI clinic at 56 Dean Street in Soho, which may inflate figures due to testing by non-residents.
Islington follows closely with 724 cases per 100,000, while Archway ranks third at 397 per 100,000. Beyond London, Liverpool leads regional cities at 302 per 100,000, trailed by Nottingham (290) and Manchester (276). These university towns feature vibrant nightlife and large student populations, potentially driving transmission.
Newcastle upon Tyne and Leeds also appear in the top 10, alongside Blackpool at 210 per 100,000, showing smaller resorts remain vulnerable.

Gonorrhoea Symptoms and Spread
Symptoms typically emerge two weeks post-infection but can remain dormant for months or stay asymptomatic. Women may experience yellow or greenish discharge, burning urination, abdominal pain, or intermenstrual bleeding. Men often report sore testicles, penile discharge, or burning during urination.
The infection spreads via unprotected sex, including oral, affecting genitals, eyes, and mouth. Oral signs include sore throat, swallowing difficulty, swollen neck glands, or throat spots. Eye infection causes redness, pain, or discharge.
Most strains respond to antibiotics. Consult a GP or sexual health clinic if concerned.
Vaccine Availability and Prevention
Bexsero (4CMenB) targets high-risk groups, especially men who have sex with men with recent bacterial STIs and multiple partners. Clinicians extend it to others deemed vulnerable. Dr Amanda Doyle, NHS National Director for Primary Care and Community Services, states: “This vaccine is already used to protect against Men B and is proven to be effective against gonorrhoea, preventing the spread of infection and reducing the rising rates of antibiotic-resistant strains. That is why it is so important that everyone eligible takes up the offer through sexual health services alongside existing jabs for mpox, hepatitis A and B, and HPV, helping to ensure we keep each other safe.”
The vaccine lowers but does not eliminate risk. Regular testing and condom use remain essential to curb spread.
