Historic Sexual Assault Charges Against Cadet Instructor
A former Edmonton cadet program volunteer faces multiple criminal charges following allegations of sexual assaults against teenage boys under his instruction a decade ago. The 37-year-old suspect reportedly served as a civilian instructor with the 2551 Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry Army Cadets during the alleged offenses.
Timeline of Alleged Offenses
Authorities indicate the sexual assaults occurred between 2009 and 2016 when the accused held an instructional position. Investigators allege three teenage cadets were sexually assaulted on separate occasions by their instructor during this period.
Charges and Arrest Details
Charles Bernatchez, 37, was arrested on January 30 and charged with:
• Two counts of sexual assault
• Two counts of sexual assault with a weapon
• Two counts of sexual interference
• Three counts of sexual exploitation
• Invitation to sexual touching
Court documents reveal sexual interference charges apply when alleged victims are below Canada’s age of consent (16 years). Records show the accused received the Governor General’s Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers in 2013 and reportedly served with the Canadian Armed Forces Cadet program intermittently since 2006.
Current Status and Conditions
Bernatchez was released from custody Monday under strict conditions that prohibit contact with minors or cadet programs. Officials confirm the investigation remains active as authorities believe additional victims may exist.
