Falvey’s Sundowner Saloon Fire: Landmark Queensland Pub Damaged

Published on

A significant fire has caused extensive damage to Falvey’s Sundowner Saloon, a distinctive pink-hued hotel situated on the Warrego Highway, a major route connecting Brisbane and Toowoomba. The blaze, which began around 8:30 AM, resulted in a partially collapsed roof and substantial structural compromise to the well-known establishment. Emergency services responded swiftly, with firefighters working diligently to bring the situation under control.

Firefighters Battle Blaze at Haigslea Hotel

Upon arrival at the scene in Haigslea, fire crews encountered heavy black smoke billowing from the building. Queensland Fire Department Acting Inspector Dan Skellern reported that the immediate priority was to confirm that all occupants had been safely evacuated. The internal structure of the hotel presented considerable challenges for firefighters.

Internal Fuel Loads Complicate Firefighting Efforts

Acting Inspector Skellern explained that the intensity of the fire was exacerbated by the materials within the hotel. “Items including carpets and poker machines contributed to the fire load,” he stated. The presence of these materials necessitated the deployment of significant resources to effectively combat the flames. A total of six fire vehicles and two specialist units were dispatched to the incident.

The operational response involved a strategic approach to manage the fire’s spread and intensity. Firefighters worked to contain the blaze, preventing it from engulfing the entire structure. The partially collapsed roof indicated the severity of the fire’s impact on the building’s integrity.

Staff Member Treated for Smoke Inhalation

A staff member who was present at Falvey’s Sundowner Saloon when the fire broke out received medical attention for smoke inhalation. The individual had reportedly attempted to fight the fire before emergency services arrived on the scene. Paramedics assessed the staff member, who was then treated for the effects of inhaling smoke.

Acting Inspector Skellern confirmed the staff member’s condition, highlighting the risks faced by those present during the initial stages of the fire. The incident underscores the importance of allowing trained emergency personnel to manage such situations.

Fire Contained, Adjoining Businesses Unaffected

Fortunately, the firefighting efforts were successful in containing the blaze primarily to the hotel itself. The adjoining bottle shop, located adjacent to the saloon, did not sustain fire damage. This containment prevented further escalation and protected adjacent commercial properties.

By late morning, before 11 AM, firefighters had successfully brought the fire under control, significantly reducing the immediate threat. The focus then shifted to extinguishing any remaining hotspots and securing the site.

Nearby Petrol Station Evacuated as Precaution

As a precautionary measure, a nearby petrol station was temporarily evacuated. This action was taken due to concerns about toxic smoke drifting towards the site. To mitigate any potential risks associated with the fire and the proximity of flammable fuel, fuel supplies at the service station were isolated.

The evacuation ensured the safety of staff and customers at the petrol station while emergency services managed the fire at the hotel. Once the smoke threat subsided, normal operations at the petrol station were expected to resume.

Investigation into Cause Underway

The cause of the fire at Falvey’s Sundowner Saloon remains undetermined at this time. Investigations are expected to commence once the site is deemed safe and accessible by authorities. Fire investigators will work to establish the origin and cause of the blaze, examining the scene for any clues.

The damage to the landmark hotel is significant, and its future operations will likely depend on the extent of the structural damage and the findings of the investigation. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the destructive potential of fires, even in well-established commercial premises.

Falvey’s Sundowner Saloon has long been a recognizable feature along the Warrego Highway, known for its unique pink facade. Its presence on a major transport route means such incidents can cause considerable disruption. The community will be awaiting further updates on the investigation and the recovery efforts for this prominent Queensland establishment.
