Family Demands Justice: New Report Questions Dad’s Death Under Bridge

Family Seeks Answers in Decade-Old Tragic Death

A grieving family is steadfast in their conviction that their beloved son, John Merrick, was the victim of a murder, not an accident, and has spent over a decade pursuing justice. John Merrick, a young father, was discovered deceased beneath a bridge in Wigginton, Staffordshire, on September 6, 2013. While authorities have consistently maintained that his death was accidental and non-suspicious, with the investigation reviewed twice, his family remains unconvinced, suspecting foul play.

The family is now calling for John’s body to be exhumed, citing a newly commissioned 46-page independent report that they believe casts significant doubt on the official findings. John’s parents, Paul and Julie Merrick, have long asserted that their son, a 32-year-old businessman, was the subject of a “carefully executed murder” and have consistently advocated for the case to be reopened. They previously offered a substantial reward in an effort to apprehend those responsible.

New Independent Report Challenges Official Narrative

The independent report, compiled by expert engineer Mike Brown, scrutinizes the sequence of events leading to John’s death. The analysis questions John’s physical capacity to have propelled himself over the bridge, the positioning of his body on the railway tracks, and the nature of his injuries sustained from a presumed train impact. According to the report, while a train strike is considered “possible,” the characteristics of his wounds are not definitive proof of such an event.

Brown’s findings suggest that if a train had moved John’s body after a fall, distinct directional marks and abrasions would be expected. However, the partial limb damage detailed in the post-mortem examination does not align with the severe trauma typically associated with rail collisions. The report concludes that the available evidence does not support a “definitive” explanation for John’s death.

Parents Push for Exhumation and Full Review

John’s father, Paul Merrick, has expressed his belief that his son’s death has never been “properly explained” and that there is “no clear evidence he was struck by a train.” The parents are now urgently requesting an exhumation to ascertain the “real cause of death” and have offered to cover the associated costs. “We have been fighting for justice for thirteen years now for the death of our son John,” Paul stated. “We do not believe John’s death was accidental.”

Authorities previously presented a scenario where John’s vehicle struck the bridge before he fell approximately 30 feet and was subsequently hit by a train. John had reportedly been at a pub with a friend and made a stop for a takeaway meal before heading home to his fiancée, Hayley Taroni, and their infant son. Hayley was the last person to speak with John, who indicated during a phone call at 10:10 p.m. that he “had to go, I’ve got a problem.”

An inquest into his death heard that John was over the legal drink-drive limit and had allegedly jumped onto the railway tracks to evade the scene of the crash. In light of the new report, Paul Merrick reiterated their plea: “We want a full review of this case, and we want John exhumed. We’ve been refused time and time again, but we won’t stop.”

Official Response from Law Enforcement

A statement from Staffordshire Police conveyed their continued sympathies to the Merrick family. The force confirmed that an investigation into the circumstances of John’s death was conducted in September 2013, with a report submitted to the coroner, who recorded the death as accidental. Following a complaint received in 2014 regarding the investigation’s conduct, the matter was voluntarily referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), now known as the Independent Office for Police Conduct. The IPCC directed a local investigation, which concluded that the complaint was unsubstantiated. A subsequent appeal by the family was also not upheld by the IPCC in November 2014. A final review in 2017, consistent with the original findings, determined that John’s death was not suspicious.
