Fan Confronts Alleged Racist During England’s World Cup Draw
A spectator identified as ‘Angry Ginge,’ real name Morgan Burtwistle, has publicly recounted an incident of alleged racism during England’s goalless draw against Ghana at Boston Stadium. The match, which concluded a 0-0 stalemate, followed England’s earlier 4-2 victory over Croatia in their Group L campaign.
The Confrontation
During the game, Burtwistle, a Manchester United supporter, reported an individual seated in front of him for making racist remarks directed at the Ghanaian national team. A video shared after the match captured Burtwistle stating, “We have a situation where the gentleman that is sat there is being racist.” He explained his immediate action: “I’ve reported it to the steward because, kick it out is the saying, I will stand by that.”
Burtwistle detailed the subsequent interaction with stadium staff: “So he’s going now to get his supervisor, and we’ll see what happens. There’s no way he should ever set foot in a stadium or watch a football game ever again.” A message overlaid on the video elaborated on the situation, reading: “The man sat in front was making incredibly racist comments toward the Ghanaian national team. Due to this it was only right for me to stand up and deal with this.”
Steward Response and Fan’s Frustration
The 24-year-old content creator claimed that a steward informed him that no immediate action could be taken unless the alleged racist comment was repeated. Burtwistle ed his disbelief, stating, “Apparently, the steward said he can’t kick him out unless he does it again. I said there’s no way on earth. All of us have heard it. He’s got to go. So we’re getting a team to kick him out now or something.”
Though Burtwistle did not disclose the specific nature of the offensive comments, the video shows the accused individual turning around and offering an apology: “I’m sorry about my comment about Ghana, it won’t happen again. Can we just forget about it?” Burtwistle’s response was firm: “Forget about you being racist!? No, mate.”
Outcome and Criticism
Burtwistle alleged that while the fan was removed from his seat, he was subsequently relocated to another section of the stadium to continue watching the match. He voiced strong criticism of the stadium’s security, stating, “It’s absolutely not good enough from the American stewards, the message before the game the message is kick it out – if you see it, say it.”
He continued, “I’ve gone and reported it, he’s not been kicked out of the stadium. We saw him as we left, he’s been allowed to watch the whole game after the things he was saying about the Ghana team. I think it’s an absolute f***ing disgrace he’s been allowed to stay in after I had the evidence and five witnesses heard him say it. It’s an absolute f***ing disgrace, it’s wrong on every single level that he can stay and get away with it. I did my part, I couldn’t have done any more.””
