Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley declares that curbing golf ball distances is non-negotiable, insisting “failure is not an option.” Governing bodies R&A and USGA have grappled with this issue for years amid strong opposition from equipment manufacturers.
Ahead of the Masters, Ridley reaffirms Augusta National’s firm support for proposed regulations. He stresses that the club’s stance extends beyond safeguarding its own course.
Adapting to Record Drives
“We will continue to make modifications as are necessary to react to driving distances that in some cases exceed 350 yards,” Ridley states. He highlights how golf once thrived on imagination, creativity, and variety but has grown overly one-dimensional.
Preserving Golf’s Core Skills
Ridley argues that legendary players stand out through mastery across all facets of the game, not just raw power. “Regulation of the golf ball is not an attempt to turn back time or stifle progress,” he explains. “It is an effort to preserve the essence of what makes golf the great game that it is.”
