Ex-Take-Two AI Lead Warns Generative AI Hype Could Harm Traditional AI

Generative AI Hype May Be ‘Poisoning the Well’ for Traditional AI Development

The integration of generative artificial intelligence and large language models (LLMs) has emerged as a deeply divisive subject within the gaming industry. Players and critics are increasingly scrutinizing new game announcements, particularly their Steam store pages, to ascertain the extent to which these advanced AI tools were employed during development.

Take-Two, the parent company behind prominent studios like Rockstar Games, previously maintained a dedicated division focused on researching and exploring AI’s potential applications in game development. However, this team was reportedly disbanded in April, a move that has raised eyebrows given the widespread adoption of generative AI by numerous companies, both openly and discreetly.

It has been revealed that the majority of the individuals within this now-dissolved team were not primarily engaged with generative AI technologies. The division originated at Zynga, a mobile game developer acquired by Take-Two in 2022, and subsequently broadened its scope to encompass the entire Take-Two organization.

A Shift in Focus from Generative AI

In a recent discussion, Dr. Luke Dicken, the former head of the AI team, shared insights into the group’s origins. He explained that the research unit was established in 2019, predating the public debut of ChatGPT in 2022 and the subsequent surge in interest surrounding generative AI.

“Generative AI is not something that I have ever been particularly passionate about,” Dr. Dicken stated. “It was something I think there’s a moral obligation to see managed as best as can be, but also on the understanding that for any big corporation in 2025/2026, no generative AI is the wrong answer that will get a lot of people’s backs up.”

Dr. Dicken acknowledged the contentious nature of generative AI but emphasized the necessity of addressing its more extreme applications. “some of the excesses of genAI are so egregious that you need to make sure you’re able to push back,” he commented.

Advocating for a Broader AI Perspective

His personal interest lies in a more comprehensive examination of AI, extending beyond the confines of generative technologies. “Five years ago, you’d say you have an algorithm that will be really beneficial for accelerating level generation content in a mobile title,” he recalled. “Back then, people looked at us like we had two heads. Now, the hype of AI has created an environment where I could tell you that AI is going to be the thing that moves your game to quantum computing, and people will nod and say: ‘Yeah, we want AI in the game’,” he added.

This heightened enthusiasm, Dr. Dicken noted, has created a more receptive audience for discussions about the benefits of traditional AI techniques that were previously overlooked. “The upside is that it has made people more receptive to conversations about what traditional techniques could have done for them years ago. They are more inclined to believe things like that can exist.”

However, Dr. Dicken expressed concern that the current overblown excitement surrounding generative AI could lead to a widespread disillusionment with the entire field of AI research should the hype bubble burst. “My worry is that generative AI is poisoning the well,” he concluded. “I don’t think there is enough sophistication and nuance to retain the traditional stuff. For LLMs, we have already stumbled into the trough of disillusionment.”
