Ghana has dismissed head coach Otto Addo just 72 days before the 2026 World Cup kicks off. The move follows a 2-1 loss to Germany in Stuttgart, marking four consecutive friendly defeats.
Recent String of Losses
The Black Stars suffered a 5-1 thrashing by Austria on Friday and earlier fell to Japan and South Korea in November matches. Germany secured victory with an 88th-minute goal from Deniz Undav.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed the decision in a statement: “The GFA has parted ways with the head coach of the senior men’s national team (Black Stars), Otto Addo, effective immediately.”
Addo’s Coaching Record
Addo, a Germany-born former Ghana international, returned for his second stint in March 2024. Despite boasting talents like Antoine Semenyo and Mohammed Kudus, his team failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. He recorded eight wins and nine losses across 22 games.
Prior to his full role, Addo assisted Milovan Rajevac and led Ghana at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. There, they notched a 3-2 win over South Korea but exited the group stage after defeats to Portugal and Uruguay.
World Cup Group L Challenges
Ghana prepares for its fifth World Cup appearance in Group L alongside England, Panama, and Croatia. The key matchup against England is set for June 23.
