Gibellina, a town in western Sicily, has been recognized as Italy’s first Capital of Contemporary Art, a title that highlights its remarkable transformation from a town devastated by an earthquake to a vibrant hub of modern artistic expression. Often described as a ‘modern Pompeii’ and an ‘open-air museum,’ Gibellina’s story is one of resilience and artistic rebirth.

A Town Reborn from Devastation

The original Gibellina was destroyed in 1968 by a catastrophic earthquake that left much of the area in ruins. The old town, now known as Ruderi di Gibellina, meaning ‘ruins of Gibellina,’ was abandoned for years. However, a new settlement, Gibellina Nuova, was established about seven miles away.
