Golders Green Knife Rampage: Two Jewish Men Stabbed in Terror Attack

Published on

Quiet Morning Turns Violent in London’s Jewish Neighborhood

A peaceful spring morning in Golders Green shattered into chaos when a knife-wielding man targeted members of the local Jewish community. The heavy-set suspect, dressed in a blue puffer jacket and carrying a backpack, prowled residential streets near a synagogue, hunting for victims.

Security camera footage at 11:15 a.m. on Highfield Avenue shows the attacker jogging behind a Jewish man in traditional attire. Another man in similar dress steps into his path, triggering the first assault.

First Attack on Shloime Rand

CCTV captures the suspect striking Shloime Rand, 34, outside a synagogue on Golders Green Road. Partially hidden by a tree, the footage reveals Rand calling for help as the attacker lunges repeatedly. Rand escapes, with the suspect briefly pursuing before fleeing.

Witness Moishe Geller described the scene: “The attacker walked up Golders Green and suddenly lunged at Mr. Rand outside the shul. Mr. Rand didn’t seem to know what had happened at first. He went back inside the shul and called the Jewish police. Only when he put his hand to his chest and saw blood did he realize he had been stabbed in the chest. He then called the ambulance.”

Brutal Assault on Elderly Moshe Shine

Five minutes later, at 11:20 a.m., the suspect attacks 76-year-old Moshe Shine at a bus stop 400 yards away. Footage shows Shine adjusting his kippah while holding a shopping bag. The attacker grabs him by the collar, delivering vicious blows to his head, face, and neck. They stumble into the road, dislodging Shine’s kippah, which blows away in the breeze.

Tariq Aziz, a pizza shop worker nearby, assisted Shine, who bled heavily from at least two stab wounds. “He came to our shop and then I gave him a tissue and helped him,” Aziz said. Witnesses noted the suspect walked away casually with the knife in hand.

Police Confrontation and Arrest

Officers arrive to find the suspect refusing commands and attempting to stab them. Mobile phone videos show him approaching boldly while shouting. Police bodycam footage captures the takedown after tasering; a passerby helps restrain him.

Met Commissioner Mark Rowley praised the officers: “They confronted a man they believed to be a terrorist, who refused to show his hands and was violent. These were not armed officers, and they feared he was carrying an explosive device. Using only their training, their courage, and their Tasers, they managed to detain him.”

A 45-year-old man with a history of serious violence and mental health issues faces charges of attempted murder. The incident is under investigation as terror-related.

Community Response and Shomrim Involvement

The volunteer Jewish security group Shomrim responded swiftly after reports of a knife-wielding man chasing people. Ben Grossnass said: “We got a phone call to the hotline at 11:20 a.m., we were on the scene within a minute and a half. He started stabbing someone outside the synagogue on Highfield Avenue, then went down Golders Green Road and stabbed a visibly Jewish man repeatedly.”

Yonathan Elkouby, 33, a Shomrim volunteer, helped hold the suspect: “Things are being done to protect us but not enough to prevent these things.”

Isaac Cohen and others in a car pursued the attacker for 10-15 minutes, warning potential victims. “He was looking for Jewish people – when he saw a Jew he started running after them,” Cohen said.

Daniela, a 29-year-old mother shopping nearby, sheltered in a bookshop: “I was walking to the butcher and the next thing we hear is screaming, ‘He’s got a knife – run!’ A man in a car told me someone had been stabbed. It was terrifying.”

Victims’ Conditions and Broader Context

Both victims remain hospitalized in stable condition. A friend of Shine described his serious neck wounds: “Moshe is a really lovely man. He is pretty quiet and would go about his business not bothering anyone. He was waiting for the bus home after morning prayer.”

Shloime Rand’s sister noted: “He’s going to recover, but we’ve been told that if the knife had hit a centimetre to the right or to the left, it would have ruptured his vital organs. He was attacked just because he’s Jewish.”

The attack follows recent arson on Jewish charity ambulances nearby, heightening community fears amid rising antisemitism concerns. Police maintain a strong presence at the cordoned scene.
