Gwendoline Christie turned heads at the 2026 Met Gala with a striking custom gown featuring a beautifully crafted mask, paying homage to opera amid backlash against Timothée Chalamet’s dismissive remarks about the art form.
Christie’s Opera-Inspired Ensemble
The 47-year-old Game of Thrones and Wednesday star showcased a gown designed by her partner, Giles Deacon, whom she has long admired. The off-the-shoulder red gown with a tulle skirt echoes her 2024 appearance and draws from multiple artistic influences.
Masks hold deep significance in opera, functioning as tools for characterization and symbolic elements in Western musical theater. Christie’s mask-centered look highlights this tradition.
The gown incorporates the elegant, flowing lines of painter John Singer Sargent in its cinched waist and mermaid silhouette. It also reflects the surreal photography of Madame Yevonde, a distant relative Christie discovered years ago, and the psychedelic imagery of Ira Cohen through swirling diagonal color patterns.
Chalamet’s Remarks Spark Outrage
Christie’s appearance follows Timothée Chalamet’s interview with Matthew McConaughey, where he expressed reluctance to work in arts forms needing preservation. He stated: “I admire people, and I’ve done it myself, doing a talk show about how we’ve got to keep movie theatres alive… And I don’t want to be working in ballet or opera… even though no one cares about this any more. All respect to the ballet and opera people out there, I just lost 14 cents in viewership, I just took shots for no reason.”
The comments drew sharp criticism from opera professionals. U.S. opera singer Isabel Leonard responded: “Honestly, I’m shocked that someone so seemingly successful can be so ineloquent and narrow-minded in his views about art… You don’t have to like all art but only a weak person/artist feels the need to diminish… the very arts that would inspire those who are interested in slowing down.”
Canadian mezzo-soprano Deepa Johnny added: “What a disappointing take. There is nothing more impressive than the magic of live theatre, ballet and opera. We should be trying to uplift these art forms.”
Separately, Chalamet’s on-set pampering during Wonka production surfaced, as comedian Tom Davis revealed on the Parenting Hell podcast. Davis noted Chalamet’s personal chef prepared three breakfast options, with Chalamet offering the extras to others.
Met Gala 2026: Theme and Highlights
The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Benefit, held on May 4, 2026, features the theme “Costume Art” with a “Fashion Is Art” dress code. Attendees explore designers’ use of the human body as a canvas.
Co-chairs include Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Vogue’s Anna Wintour. This marks Williams’ first co-chair role. The exhibition, running May 10, 2026, to January 10, 2027, in the new Conde M. Nast Galleries, categorizes garments by classical nudes, aging and pregnant bodies, and anatomical forms.
Lead sponsors Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez serve as honorary co-chairs. Curator Andrew Bolton explained: “Fashion has the status of art because of, and not in spite of, its relation to the body.” Yves Saint Laurent also supports the exhibit.
The event funds the Costume Institute significantly, following Anna Wintour’s recent transition from Vogue editor-in-chief after 37 years.
