Haaland’s Goal Drought Derails Man City’s Premier League Title Hopes

Published on

Manchester City’s Premier League title aspirations falter amid Erling Haaland’s ongoing goal drought. The team desperately needed their star striker against West Ham United on Saturday, following Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over Everton that extended their lead to 10 points at the top.

Haaland, who boasts 11 goals against West Ham—more than any other opponent—delivered one of his poorest displays of the season. The 1-1 draw, with Bernardo Silva opening the scoring before Konstantinos Mavropanos equalized, severely hampers City’s championship bid. Haaland failed to find the net despite opportunities.

Guardiola Addresses Haaland’s Form

City manager Pep Guardiola emphasized the striker’s importance. “Erling knows we need his goals,” Guardiola stated. “We need to create more chances for him too, but he had three or four good chances early in the first half and didn’t score. But it’s not just about him. It’s about all the players, the vibes they feel. But he will be back. Erling will be back and maybe soon too.”

Haaland’s Statistical Slump

Haaland leads the Premier League Golden Boot race with 22 goals, four ahead of Brentford’s Igor Thiago. However, he has endured a month without scoring in any competition. Over his last 12 league matches, he netted just three times, two from penalties.

This marks the worst form dip of the Norway international’s career, coinciding with Norway’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup. City’s struggles mirror Haaland’s, including a 3-0 first-leg deficit in the UEFA Champions League round-of-16 against Real Madrid ahead of the Etihad return leg on Tuesday.

Performance Breakdown vs. West Ham

Haaland recorded only 21 touches against West Ham, a relegation-battling side City also drew 2-2 with Nottingham Forest previously. He attempted four shots, forcing one save from goalkeeper Mads Hermansen. A notable miss came from 12 yards after Jérémy Doku’s perfect setup, scuffing wide. Late on, a misjudged cross struck him painfully in the groin area—normally a scoring chance.

Fatigue or injury may factor in, given Haaland’s play since the FIFA Club World Cup in June. The absence of Kevin De Bruyne, who departed for Napoli last summer, and Phil Foden’s omission from the starting lineup limit service. Rayan Cherki’s 60th-minute introduction boosted creativity, but Haaland squandered his lone clear opportunity.

Broader Implications for City

Great strikers endure dry spells, but this prolonged slump hits City hard during their typical second-half surge. Arsenal’s Viktor Gyökeres, with six goals in 12 games including an 89th-minute opener against Everton, fills the void effectively.

Haaland’s consistency has defined City; without it, reliance shifts to Foden’s seven league goals. This season’s struggles position Arsenal to claim the title.
