Hailey Bieber, the 29-year-old founder of Rhode beauty, shares intimate details about her surprise pregnancy and a high-risk medical condition that threatened her journey to motherhood. She welcomed son Jack Blues, now 19 months old, with husband Justin Bieber, 32.
The Unexpected Pregnancy
During an appearance on the SHE MD podcast with host Mary Alice Haney and her OB/GYN, Dr. Thais Aliabadi, Bieber recounts how her pregnancy caught her off guard over two years ago. “It was a surprise,” Bieber states, recalling her doctor’s warning. Dr. Aliabadi interjects, “And I told her like, ‘Don’t get pregnant!'”
Prior to conception, doctors identified a uterine septum—a genetic condition present from birth. “I had a septum in my uterus,” Bieber explains. “Dr. A kept saying, ‘We need to look at this and keep an eye on it before you get pregnant because it could potentially be an issue.'”
Risks of Uterine Septum
Dr. Aliabadi describes the condition: a thin wall inside the uterus that can range from mild to severe. Bieber’s case measured moderate, affecting 1 to 3 percent of women. Moderate septums elevate miscarriage risk to 25-40 percent and preterm delivery chances to 10-20 percent.
“And so the risk for her was about maybe 25 to 40 percent risk of miscarriage,” Dr. Aliabadi notes. Despite the dangers, the pregnancy progressed successfully. “Everything was opening and doing what it needed to do, luckily,” Bieber adds. Her doctor recalls Bieber’s optimism: “She looked at me and said, ‘You know what? I believe that everything’s gonna work out fine.'”
Challenging Birth and Postpartum
Bieber faced further hurdles during delivery. At 39 weeks, she leaked amniotic fluid and required induction with medication and a balloon to dilate her cervix. After 18 hours of labor without an epidural, she gave birth but suffered a postpartum hemorrhage.
“I trust my doctor with my life,” Bieber reflects on the scare. “But I was bleeding really badly, and people die, and the thought crosses your mind.” In a prior Vogue interview, she described the ordeal: “That s**t was so crazy. That was not fun. They broke my water. I went into labor and I labored for a few hours. No epidural, nothing.”
Postpartum, Bieber adjusted to her changed body, with wider hips and larger breasts. “I had to give myself some grace,” she says, embracing her “new version” amid marriage rumors.
