The actor described the practical difficulties posed by the prosthetic beard, particularly during intense battle sequences filmed in muddy conditions. “I had to have a fake beard,” Jackman recalled in an interview. “And in that scene in the mud, there were a couple of takes where I put my head up. The beard’s gone, ‘Oh, somewhere in there.'” He elaborated on the makeshift solutions employed, noting, “By the end, it was, literally, like, gaffer tape just underneath and you couldn’t see anything, it was completely just muddy, just trying to keep this thing on.”
The distinctive look was conceived by Jackman’s long-time hair and makeup team, Sean Flanagan and Pamela Westmore, during the filming of another project. “Sean Flanagan, I have to give him props. He’s my hair guy. He has worked with me on a lot of films,” Jackman said. “Pamela Westmore, who does make-up, the two of them, we were sitting in the trailer at Song Sung Blue, and both of them, they looked at me and I said, ‘What’s going on?'” They presented their concept, which Jackman immediately approved and forwarded to Sarnoski, who found it to be the perfect fit for the film’s vision.

The director stressed that this portrayal is not about a misunderstood hero, but a “brutal guy.” He believes this interpretation is not as radical as it might seem. “I think in a lot of ways, like, this isn’t some crazy interpretation of Robin,” Sarnoski commented. “It’s just like, OK, what if some of these violent things actually happened? What if he handled that like a lot of humans do, which is that he is haunted in some ways?” He suggested that this approach leads to a more historically grounded depiction of Robin Hood’s eventual demise, a story with ancient roots.

Sarnoski feels that by exploring the potential psychological toll of a life of violence, the film offers a level of accuracy often overlooked in more sanitized versions. “I feel like in a lot of ways this is an interpretation of Robin that has just as much accuracy as a dancing fox does,” he remarked, perhaps ironically, highlighting the perceived departure from conventional portrayals.
