Hugo Viana’s Liverpool Snub: Key Call Led to Newcastle Move

Hugo Viana’s Transfer Crossroads

Hugo Viana, the Portuguese midfielder now serving as Manchester City’s director of football, once stood at a career-defining juncture. In 2002, he emerged as a prime target for Liverpool, but a pivotal phone conversation with Newcastle United’s manager, Sir Bobby Robson, prompted him to pack his bags for the north east instead.

Viana burst onto the scene with Sporting CP in 2001, dazzling at just 19 years old during his debut season. His performances drew interest from top Premier League clubs, positioning him as a key piece for Newcastle’s Champions League ambitions. At the time, Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd praised him highly, stating, “He’s just the player Robson wants to spearhead our Champions League bid.” Shepherd further emphasized, “The consensus is that he’s the best young player in the world.”

Liverpool’s Pursuit and the Decisive Conversation

Liverpool, under Gerard Houllier, actively courted the young talent. Viana recalled discussions with Houllier and encouragement from his Portugal teammate Abel Xavier, who urged him to join Anfield and become a fan favorite. As the 2002 World Cup unfolded, Viana remained undecided amid interest from multiple clubs.

However, the turning point came during a brief call with Robson. Viana reflected, “At the time of the 2002 World Cup, I still had not decided on where I wanted to go. There were a few clubs interested in me. I spoke on the phone with Gerard Houllier at Liverpool and one of my Portugal teammates, Abel Xavier, was always telling me to go there.”

“Liverpool are obviously a huge club, and I was very confused and unsure about what I wanted to do, but then I spoke to Bobby Robson and after five or ten minutes, I was clear about Newcastle. I told him that they needed to speak to Sporting about a deal, but that there would not be a big issue with my contract.”

Robson, who had scouted Viana during Sporting matches and the Under-21 European Championships, shared a connection through his own stint at Sporting, where he remains a legend in Portugal. Viana noted, “Mr Robson said he knew me; he’d watched some games at Sporting and in the Under-21 European Championships. He also worked at Sporting and is a legend in Portugal, so I felt more close to him and he told me he would give me time to adapt to life in England without worrying.”

Without even visiting Tyneside first, Viana committed to the move. He later described Newcastle as “an amazing city and the fans are very passionate about football; they live for it and the atmosphere was great.”

Life on Tyneside and Lasting Reflections

Viana’s time at Newcastle spanned 61 appearances, where he contributed four goals and nine assists. While he struggled to fully replicate his early promise in the Premier League, he expressed no regrets about the decision or his broader career path.

“In the end, I joined Newcastle without visiting the place first, but it is an amazing city,” Viana said. On his career overall, he added, “During my career, I never wanted to imagine ‘What if?’ I’m not sad about my career. It could be better, sure, but it could be worse. I never look back and think what could be. It doesn’t change anything; things happen without your control and it is important to adapt yourself to reality.”
