Despite the dramatic visual of Lapenna being overwhelmed, REK has clarified that the influencer ultimately secured a victory in this particular bout. He reportedly went on to challenge an even larger robotic opponent later that same evening.

Origins of the Robot Fighting Company

Cix Liv, CEO of REK, explained that the company’s foray into human-versus-robot combat was not part of its original business plan. REK typically specializes in staging fights between remote-controlled robots, akin to a real-world interpretation of the movie “Real Steel.” The opportunity arose approximately two months prior when Lapenna approached REK with a proposal to compete himself.

Liv recounted Lapenna’s initial request to forgo protective clothing, a condition REK insisted against. “When he saw what the robot could do, he actually said that he needed more,” Liv noted, highlighting the unexpected power of the robotic combatants.

Safety Measures and Equipment

For the engagements, Lapenna was equipped with motorcycle gear for protection and spiked boxing gloves designed to cushion his hands. These measures were implemented to mitigate the risks associated with facing a machine engineered for powerful movements.

Liv emphasized the significant force these robots possess, stating, “We have like 500 try-hard men emailing us saying they’re going to fight the robot, but they don’t realize that it’s like trying to punch a metal wall.” He elaborated that while an average adult can generate approximately 650 pounds (294 kg) of force with a kick, REK’s large robots can deliver up to 850 pounds (385 kg) per strike.

Fight Outcome and Injuries

Contrary to the visual narrative presented in some clips, Liv confirmed that Lapenna did indeed “defeat” the large bot featured in the viral footage. According to REK’s account, Lapenna managed to unbalance the robot, causing it to crash into a wall, where its systems malfunctioned, leading to its “head” becoming detached.

While Liv remained discreet about the results of Lapenna’s subsequent fight against a third bot, he indicated that the human fighter did not fare as well. Despite the intense physical encounters, Lapenna’s primary injury was a self-inflicted wound to his hand from punching metal. He emerged from the event otherwise unharmed.

Future of Human-Robot Combat

REK maintains that hosting human combatants was conceived as a one-off “stunt” rather than a long-term venture. However, the significant public interest and numerous requests to participate suggest that further human-robot confrontations may be on the horizon. “We’ll have to do it again,” Liv commented, acknowledging the demand for more such events.
