iPhone 17e Review: Major Upgrades at Affordable £599 Price

Published on

Apple continues to impress with its latest iPhone lineup. The iPhone 17, launched in September 2025, stands out with its enhanced ProMotion display, increased storage options, and the powerful A19 chip that handles demanding tasks effortlessly. A slim iPhone Air and the striking Cosmic Orange iPhone 17 Pro further elevate the series. The new iPhone 17e, unveiled in March 2026, delivers substantial improvements over the iPhone 16e for £599.

Key Upgrades and Performance

Testing reveals the iPhone 17e features the speedy A19 processor, a vibrant 6.1-inch display protected by durable Ceramic Shield Glass 2, and 256GB of base storage—double that of its predecessor. MagSafe integration enhances wireless charging convenience and allows seamless attachment of accessories like wallets, addressing a notable absence in the 16e.

The latest C1X modem doubles mobile download speeds while consuming less power, ideal for streaming and file transfers on the go. Satellite connectivity enables text messaging without cellular signal, complemented by life-saving Crash Detection that alerts emergency services after accidents.

Camera Capabilities

A single Fusion camera on the rear captures sharp photos with 2x zoom, portrait mode, and low-light enhancements. Video recording supports 4K with Spatial Audio, automatic Noise Reduction, and Audio Mix for cinematic quality. While it falls short of the iPhone 17 Pro, test shots deliver colorful, detailed images suitable for social media.

Design and Features

The customizable Action Button provides quick access to functions like the flashlight, camera, Focus mode, or Silent mode. Face ID in the traditional notch ensures secure unlocking and supports password-free Apple Pay transactions. The premium aerospace-grade aluminum and frosted glass construction offers a high-end feel.

Battery life comfortably lasts a full day with fast charging for quick top-ups. A new soft pink color option adds appeal, though more shades are available on the £799 iPhone 17.

Limitations and Comparisons

The 60Hz display lacks the smoothness of the iPhone 17’s higher refresh rate. The camera setup omits a wide-angle lens, limits zoom to 2x optical quality, and has no dedicated shutter button.

The iPhone 16e now sells for £499, but its missing upgrades make the 17e a better value. Android alternatives like the Nothing Phone 4a offer triple cameras, rapid charging, and a larger screen for £349, though Apple devices retain superior resale value.

Verdict

The iPhone 17 remains the top non-Pro choice, but the 17e excels as a budget-friendly option with speed, MagSafe, ample storage, reliable battery, and robust build. Apple’s refreshed lineup presents exciting decisions for buyers.
