Ipswich Town Players Fear McKenna Poached by PL Rivals After Promotion

Published on

Ipswich Town players worry that manager Kieran McKenna could be targeted by a Premier League rival following their second promotion to the top flight. After relegation last season, the Tractor Boys achieved an immediate return from the Championship under McKenna’s leadership, marking his third promotion with the club in four seasons.

McKenna’s Contract and Reputation

McKenna remains under contract until June 2028, meaning any interested club must pay substantial compensation. The 39-year-old boasts a strong standing in football circles. He featured on Chelsea’s shortlist before Enzo Maresca’s appointment in summer 2024 and drew interest from Brighton.

Crystal Palace searches for a new manager this summer, with known admirers of McKenna at Selhurst Park.

Challenges Ahead in the Premier League

McKenna shows no desire to depart Ipswich, yet promoted managers grapple with building a competitive top-flight squad while maintaining financial stability. In the 2024-25 season, Ipswich invested over £130 million but earned just 22 points from 38 games. The club then posted a £26 million transfer profit last summer by selling Omari Hutchinson to Nottingham Forest and Liam Delap to Chelsea.

McKenna Celebrates Historic Achievement

Following a 3-0 victory over QPR that sealed the promotion, McKenna savored the fans’ adulation during an open-top bus tour. He stated: “It means a lot. It’s probably been the hardest one, if I’m honest. It’s brilliant. I know how hard we’ve had to work to turn it around. As a club we had such a climb and a steep fall. We’ve had to rebuild this team under difficult circumstances and we deserve to be where we are.

‘It was special to do it back-to-back with basically the same group of players. I don’t think it will ever be repeated again with the way finances are going. This one has been a big challenge. I know how hard we have had to work for it and that it could have gone in completely different direction so I’m proud we kept it together and get it over the line.’”
