Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan Vows to Continue Amidst Leadership Questions

Premier Resolute Despite Party Discontent and Polls

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan has firmly stated her commitment to her leadership role, dismissing internal party rumblings and external polling that question her performance. “I’m all in,” Allan declared, emphasizing her determination to navigate current challenges and deliver for Victorians.

Recent analysis indicates a segment of Labor MPs are growing frustrated with Allan’s handling of various issues, particularly the ongoing CFMEU corruption investigation. Concerns have been raised about declining public support, with some parliamentarians worried that electoral numbers are continuing to slide in the face of challenges from opposition parties, including the Liberals and One Nation.

Polls Suggest Shifting Voter Sentiment

An opinion poll conducted by a prominent media organization this week suggests a majority of voters believe it is time for a change in leadership within the state Labor party. The survey also revealed that 39 percent of Labor voters share this sentiment.

Facing a barrage of questions regarding her position, Premier Allan invoked a well-known adage, stating, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.” She asserted that the public is seeking practical solutions to real-world pressures, such as the rising cost of living, rather than internal political maneuvering.

“Navel-gazing doesn’t help people with those cost-of-living pressures that are so real right now,” Allan stated. “I am absolutely determined to see this through.”

No Formal Challenge Yet, But Speculation Lingers

Sources within the Labor party indicate that no formal steps have yet been taken to count numbers for a leadership challenge, and no clear alternative candidate has emerged beyond speculation. However, some MPs have privately suggested that a challenge is a possibility, though they acknowledge that a full-fledged campaign is not yet underway.

While many Labor parliamentarians recognize the electoral challenges confronting the government, a significant number remain committed to the current leadership, believing that a change at this juncture could further diminish the party’s re-election prospects.

Premier Allan has reportedly denied any personal knowledge of leadership discussions within her party, stating that no MP has approached her with concerns.

Strengthening Anti-Corruption Powers

Addressing the CFMEU issue, Allan highlighted her government’s commitment to bolstering the powers of the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC). “We are going to give IBAC follow-the-money powers, we are going to make those powers retrospective,” she announced, signaling a proactive approach to tackling corruption.

The Premier also acknowledged the evolving political landscape, noting the impact of global shocks on households and the rise of new political forces. “I do acknowledge that the old rules of politics have changed,” Allan commented. “The global shocks are really hurting households.”

She articulated a vision for the state that contrasts with potential right-wing alliances, stating, “I don’t believe that Victorians want cuts and chaos that comes with a right-wing partnership with a Liberal-National-One Nation outfit.”

Cabinet Support Expressed

Senior cabinet colleague Health Minister Harriet Shing publicly voiced her support for the Premier, commending her resilience. “She has stood firm against constant opposition and division from the Liberals, from the Nationals and now from One Nation,” Shing said. “I’m really proud to stand by the premier and I know others are too.”

The coming months will be crucial in determining the extent of this support and the premier’s path forward leading up to the state election in November.
