Jack Black and Tanya Haden, an artist and musician, first crossed paths in high school in Santa Monica, California. Black recounted their story on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, saying, “I just was always in awe of them.” They occasionally spoke despite both having partners at the time.

Years later, at a mutual friend’s surprise birthday party, Tanya made the first move. “She approached him and asked if he wanted to get dinner and gave him her number,” Black recalled. “And I was like, oh my God. Heaven opened up above my head, because it was like, this is the thing that I would always want to happen.”

The couple started dating seriously and married in 2006, shortly after Tanya became pregnant. Initially hesitant about marriage, Black changed his mind at his brother’s urging: “We didn’t get married because it was like, [we] don’t really believe in the contract and that whole thing. Why is it necessary? And then as soon as she had a baby in her belly, my brother was like, ‘What the hell are you — you marry her!’ I was like, you’re right, dude. I got on bended knee and she laughed and said yes.”

Black credits their enduring bond to their long acquaintance. “We didn’t date or really even talk, but I remember her and her sister[s]. She’s a triplet. And just loving the whole family. I just thought they had a real vibe,” he explained. “We started getting very serious, and the relationship hit the ground running. It’s like we were making up for lost time.”
