Japan Coach Rips Australia’s 11 PM Beer Ban After Asian Cup Win

Japan’s coach Nils Nielsen criticized Australia’s nightlife rules following his team’s 1-0 victory over the Matildas in the Asian Cup final in Sydney. The Greenland-born manager stunned reporters with his post-match comments on the country’s alcohol restrictions.

Post-Match Outburst on Beer Laws

When asked about celebration plans, Nielsen highlighted the early flight and local licensing laws. “We have a very early flight tomorrow morning. And here in Australia, it’s such a strange country—you can’t buy a beer after 11 o’clock,” he said with a grin. “What kind of country is that?”

He added, “Perhaps the only annoying thing about Australia is that you cannot get a beer when you’re thirsty. So how do you explain that? I thought it was a modern country, but no.” The remarks quickly gained attention online after weeks in the country for the tournament.

Match Highlights and Praise for Players

Japan secured their third continental title before over 74,000 fans, thanks to Maika Hamano’s stunning first-half goal. The team withstood a late surge from the hosts to claim the win.

Nielsen praised his squad: “I’m very lucky to be working with players that are that good. Japan can be an inspiration for many in some ways. We can find a style that fits our players because they are talented.”

Colorful Pre-Final Comments

Known for blunt humor, Nielsen used a vivid analogy before the final when discussing favorites: “It’s like asking a bee to explain to a fly why honey is better than s***. We are talking about a final in a major tournament. Both teams can win.”

His mix of wit and strategy defined Japan’s run, with prolific scoring leading to the gritty decider.

Respect for the Matildas

Despite the jab, Nielsen lauded the opponents: “Australia are a world-class team with world-class players. They were led well—they always had something up their sleeves.”

Matildas coach Joe Montemurro commended his players after the defeat: “I’ve got 26 warriors out there that for 21 days have been absolutely fantastic.”
