Jean and Steve Green: A Look Inside Britain’s Oldest Farming Couple’s Love Story

Published on

Jean and Steve Green, a beloved couple known for their appearances on Channel 5’s ‘The Yorkshire Vet,’ have captivated audiences with their enduring love story and dedication to farming. Now featured in a spin-off series, ‘The Yorkshire Vet: At Home with the Greens,’ which highlights their lives as the oldest working farmers, their journey from a whirlwind romance to over four decades of marriage is a testament to their unique bond. The couple, who reside at Stoneybrough Farm in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, have not only built a life together but have also become familiar faces on television, sharing their passion for agriculture and their personal lives with viewers.

An Unlikely Beginning and a Whirlwind Romance

Jean and Steve’s story began with an introduction orchestrated by chance. Steve hired Jean’s brother for a job, leading to the couple meeting. At 27, Jean discovered that Steve, who was 23 years her senior, was interested in pursuing a relationship. Despite the age difference, their connection was immediate and profound. What followed was a whirlwind romance that culminated in marriage just three months after they started dating. They exchanged vows at St. Mary’s Church in Thirsk, and soon after, welcomed their daughter, Sarah.

Reflecting on their early days, Jean shared with The Yorkshire Post that many doubted their union would last. “Everybody said it wouldn’t last,” she recalled. “The best way to a man’s heart is through his stomach… We are happy-go-lucky, and we love each other.” This sentiment has clearly guided their enduring marriage, proving that a strong foundation of love and mutual affection can overcome skepticism.

A Deep and Enduring Partnership

Over 40 years of marriage have only deepened Jean and Steve’s connection. In 2020, they celebrated their enduring love by renewing their vows, an event captured by the cameras of ‘The Yorkshire Vet.’ During the ceremony, Steve expressed the depth of his feelings for Jean, stating, “Ever since we met 40 years ago, you’ve made me the happiest man in the world. You mean everything.” This heartfelt declaration underscores the profound impact they have had on each other’s lives.

Their bond is so strong that they had rarely spent time apart until Jean required emergency surgery last year. This near-constant companionship highlights the unique closeness they share, a rarity in any relationship, let alone one spanning decades of shared life and work.

Life on Stoneybrough Farm

Jean and Steve are dedicated to their life at Stoneybrough Farm, where they manage a herd of calves. Their days are consumed by the demanding yet rewarding work of livestock and land management. Jean recently spoke about the evolving challenges of modern farming, noting to The Yorkshire Post, “Farming is not what it used to be and is becoming increasingly difficult to make ends meet.” Despite these difficulties, they embrace a simple, fulfilling lifestyle.

Their daily routine involves early mornings, feeding the young animals, and tending to the farm. “We like the simple life, we get up early and have breakfast then go out and feed the baby animals we have. We come in and light the fire with wood to have a bath,” Jean described. Their busy lives are further enlivened by their numerous animals, with Jean humorously mentioning they have “about 50 mouths to feed, including 14 and a half cats!”

The Heartbreaking Sale of Their Dairy Herd

A particularly poignant moment in their television career occurred in September 2015 when viewers witnessed the emotional sale of their dairy herd. The episode, featured in ‘The Yorkshire Vet: A Decade in the Moors and Dales,’ documented the difficult decision forced upon them. Veterinarian Peter Wright explained that Steve’s health required him to step back from the demanding work of dairy farming. “Steve had to go into hospital suddenly for an operation, and sadly, they’ve said, at his age, he won’t be able to continue looking after his cows,” Wright stated.

The sale was a deeply emotional experience for the couple. With Steve hospitalized, Jean found herself overwhelmed by the impending departure of their beloved herd. “I can’t bear it,” she sobbed during the filming. Although Steve was still recovering, he returned home in time to bid farewell to the cows. “I’m very heartbroken, really. But you see, it might be a bit much for me in winter,” he shared, acknowledging the physical toll the work took on him. Peter Wright described the episode as “probably the most emotional episode of The Yorkshire Vet,” reflecting the profound sadness shared by the farming community and the show’s dedicated viewers.

An Enduring Legacy in Farming and Television

Jean and Steve Green’s story is more than just a television feature; it is a narrative of resilience, enduring love, and unwavering commitment to a way of life. Their journey, from their unexpected romance to navigating the challenges of modern agriculture and personal health, resonates with many. As Britain’s oldest farming couple, they continue to inspire, demonstrating that passion, dedication, and a deep connection can sustain a fulfilling life, both on the farm and in the public eye.
