Jesse Tyler Ferguson has disclosed his reluctance toward a Modern Family spinoff centered on his character Mitchell Pritchett and Eric Stonestreet’s Cameron Tucker, citing a desire to explore new opportunities after 11 years on the hit sitcom.
Character Backstory and Spinoff Concept
Ferguson portrayed the meticulous environmental lawyer Mitchell Pritchett, who shared a long-term partnership with Cameron Tucker, a Missouri native played by Stonestreet. The couple adopted their Vietnamese daughter, Lily, early in the series and wed in a celebrated episode following California’s 2013 same-sex marriage legalization. By the finale, they relocated to Missouri with Lily and their newborn son, Rexford, after Cam secured a college football coaching position. The proposed spinoff would have depicted their life on Cam’s family farm in Missouri.
Ferguson’s Mixed Emotions
In a recent podcast episode hosted with Wendi McLendon-Covey, Ferguson recounted the timing challenges. “Modern Family ended and then we had a pandemic, you know. I was so excited for this next chapter of my life, and then it was like, everyone go inside,” he shared. Although initially intrigued by the spinoff idea with Stonestreet, Ferguson prioritized a New York play. “It sort of felt like, as the reality of, maybe the spinoff was actually going to happen, I literally felt like, ‘Oh my god, I want to date other people,’” he added, expressing his wish to experience life beyond the sitcom.
The project ultimately fell through. McLendon-Covey remained upbeat, predicting a potential return. “After a little bit more time, it’ll come back and it’ll be the right time because enough time will have happened for new ideas to germinate. And you’ll all want to do it by that time,” she told Ferguson.
Previous Comments and Network Decision
In 2022, Ferguson praised the spinoff script as “very good,” leaving the door open if producers showed interest. However, in 2024, Stonestreet voiced frustration over ABC’s rejection. “I don’t think it’s potential anymore. They had their chance. Chris Lloyd and a couple of the writers wrote a really great script that spun Jesse and I off in our life in Missouri, and they said, ‘No.’ They just said, ‘We don’t want to do it,’” he stated. Stonestreet noted the emotional sting, feeling undervalued despite strong chemistry with Ferguson. Co-creator Christopher Lloyd, who collaborated with Steven Levitan on the original series, supported the effort as a writer.
Fan Demand and Legacy
Fans continue clamoring for a reunion, with several cast members open to it. Stonestreet has advocated for a Christmas special, while Ed O’Neill, who played Jay Pritchett, expressed willingness. Over 11 seasons from 2009 to 2020, Modern Family secured 22 Emmy Awards, including five straight Outstanding Comedy Series wins from 2010 to 2014, plus honors for its stellar ensemble featuring Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, and Sofia Vergara.
