Jesy Nelson recently shared heartwarming photos of her nine-month-old twin daughters, Ocean and Story, receiving treatment at Great Ormond Street Hospital for their rare genetic condition, Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type 1.
Severe Diagnosis and Prognosis
The twins received their SMA Type 1 diagnosis in January. This progressive disorder weakens muscles over time, and without treatment, children with the most severe form often have a life expectancy of less than two years.
Latest Hospital Update
In recent posts, Nelson showed her daughters snug in a shared bed, wrapped in a blanket with leg splints to correct foot positioning. She captioned the image affectionately: “Their little splints.”
A video captured the playful moment when one twin removed the other’s dummy, prompting giggles from Nelson. She described each hospital visit as an “educational experience,” sharing a fun fact from the wall about alligators living 30 to 50 years in the wild, longer in captivity.
Earlier this month, Nelson explained the need for splints: “So today, I had to go pick up the girls’ splints because their feet are pointing, and they need to be flattened out. It made me really sad.”
Commitment to Awareness
Despite the challenges, Nelson continues filming her Prime Video series to highlight the journey. During a Q&A, she stated: “I just hope people continue to watch the next part of the journey. When the girls got their diagnosis, we decided that we wanted to continue filming. As hard as it was, we were like, ‘You know what? There’s a reason you guys are here, and we’ve got to make the best out of this situation.'”
Push for Newborn Screening
Nelson actively campaigns for NHS implementation of SMA Type 1 screening at birth. Her petition recently exceeded 100,000 signatures, securing a debate in the House of Commons. She expressed gratitude: “I cannot actually put into words how grateful I am that this moment has just happened right here! And it is all thanks to you guys. Thank you to every single person that took time out of their day to sign this petition. You have no idea how much this means to me and the SMA community. This is the first hurdle but we bloody did it and I truly believe that together we are going to make change!”
Family Update
Nelson and the twins’ father, Zion Foster, parted ways in January but remain friends focused on co-parenting.
