Joe Cole Slams Chelsea Strategy After 8-2 PSG Thrashing

Published on

Chelsea suffered a humiliating 8-2 aggregate defeat to PSG in the Champions League, prompting former midfielder Joe Cole to question the club’s strategy and overall direction under current ownership.

Match Breakdown

Chelsea entered the second leg hoping for a miracle comeback after a 5-2 loss in Paris the previous week. However, disaster struck early when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia capitalized on a error by Mamadou Sarr to score past Robert Sanchez within six minutes. Bradley Barcola doubled the lead shortly after the 15-minute mark, and Senny Mayulu sealed a 3-0 victory for PSG in the second half.

This result marks one of the heaviest European defeats in Chelsea’s history, leaving them facing a battle for Champions League qualification next season.

Cole’s Post-Match Critique

Speaking on TNT Sports after the game, Cole highlighted the vast gap between Chelsea and elite clubs like PSG. “That is a real leveller of where this club is compared to Paris,” Cole stated. “This is a problem with strategy and the direction of where the club are going. This is a real eye-opener to where we are as a club at the moment.”

He emphasized the need for better spending decisions: “There’s a lot of money being spent and we need to really think of what we’re doing and how we’re doing it. That’s simply not good enough.” Cole stressed prioritizing football operations over business interests: “As a football club, you’ve got to go football club first, not business first. Simple as that, or else you’ll get performances like that.”

Cole defended new manager Liam Rosenior, noting he has “just come through the door” and bears no blame for the current woes.

Path to Salvaging the Season

Fellow TNT Sports pundit Owen Hargreaves pointed to Chelsea’s precarious position in sixth place, one point behind fifth-placed Liverpool with eight Premier League games remaining. A fifth Champions League spot could aid their cause, but tough fixtures loom against Manchester City, Manchester United, and Liverpool away.

“If they can find a way to win the FA Cup and finish in the top five that would salvage the season,” Hargreaves said. “But if you look at those fixtures, they’re really difficult. They’ll do well to finish in the top five.”

Chelsea face Everton in the Premier League on Saturday evening and host Port Vale in the FA Cup quarter-finals on April 4.
