Supermodel Jordan Barrett Discusses Body Image Battles
Renowned Australian supermodel Jordan Barrett, 29, has candidly shared his experiences with mental health challenges, including body dysmorphia. In a recent interview, Barrett highlighted the pervasive nature of body image concerns within the modeling industry, admitting he is not immune to these pressures.
Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is characterized by an obsessive preoccupation with perceived flaws in one’s appearance. Barrett explained the unique pressures of his profession, stating, “I’m around some of the most beautiful people in the world and they all think that they’re horrific looking.”
Challenges with Sample Sizes and Body Image
Barrett detailed how his physique has often not aligned with industry standards, particularly concerning sample clothing sizes. “I’ve gone through that, I think I’ve got body dysmorphia to a sense where I always think I’m too skinny,” he revealed. “I would be given, I think, a size 28 pair of pants and I’m a six-foot-three boy (size 32 pant). I’ve never been able to fit a sample size my entire career.” He further elaborated on the need to adapt, stating, “I wasn’t sample size when I was given number one model status that would fit these clothes that were sample size so I was always having to hide my height … but whatever it took for the booking.”
Images surfaced in late 2023 showing a noticeably gaunt Barrett, prompting concern among fans after his appearance at London Fashion Week. He later explained this weight loss was in preparation for a marathon.
Extended Break and ADHD Diagnosis
Barrett also disclosed taking a hiatus from modeling for over two years to address anxiety and an Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) diagnosis. He described the concentration difficulties associated with ADHD, noting, “I have to read a book four or five times while listening to an audiobook to get through it.”
The supermodel’s journey in the fashion world began at a young age. He was discovered at 13 in a grocery store on the Gold Coast by Kirk Blake of What Model Management. At the time, he recalled, he was attempting to steal matches to light cigarettes, an anecdote he shared in a 2013 interview.
Barrett has previously been linked to several high-profile personalities, including Paris Hilton, Hailey Baldwin, Sofia Richie, Megan Blake Irwin, Lara Stone, and Sahara Ray.
