Spanish Tenor to Headline Star-Studded Concert at Brisbane’s Iconic Stadium

Brisbane’s Gabba stadium is set to echo with music once again as legendary Spanish tenor José Carreras celebrates his 80th birthday with a major all-star concert this December. Organizers revealed the event, titled Carreras & Friends, will feature a remarkable line-up of international and local talent.

An Unlikely Gathering of Music Legends

Carreras will be joined on stage by a diverse array of performers, including pop sensation Robbie Williams, the acclaimed Irish group The Corrs, singer-songwriter Ronan Keating, Heart’s Anne Wilson, and Australian music icons Darren Hayes of Savage Garden and Natalie Imbruglia. The concert will also feature fellow opera stars Katherine Jenkins and Australian tenor Mark Vincent.

The evening promises a dynamic program of collaborations and individual performances, all supported by a grand ensemble of over 90 musicians from the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. The event is slated to culminate in a spectacular all-star finale.

The Gabba’s Musical Renaissance

The Gabba, a venue primarily known for its sporting events and slated for redevelopment after the 2032 Olympics, rarely hosts live music. Carreras & Friends marks the first concert at the stadium since major performances by Taylor Swift and Charli XCX in 2019, and Adele in 2017. This cements the venue’s potential for large-scale musical spectacles.

While some artists on the bill have recently toured Australia, such as The Corrs in February 2025, and Robbie Williams is scheduled to perform in Brisbane shortly before this event, the unconventional mix of genres is designed to capture broad appeal across Queensland and beyond.

Economic Impact and Promoters’ Vision

Queensland’s Minister for Tourism, Andrew Powell, expressed confidence in the concert’s ability to stimulate the state’s economy, projecting an estimated $11 million in revenue. “José Carreras is one of the world’s most celebrated performers, and this exclusive Queensland event will attract more visitors, support local businesses, and showcase our state to audiences around the globe,” Minister Powell stated.

The concert is being promoted by Echo Pacific Entertainment, the latest venture from promoter Andrew McManus. McManus’s previous large-scale event, Pandemonium Rocks, faced scrutiny due to changes in its line-up and a privacy incident involving ticket holder information.

Echoes of Pavarotti and Personal Dreams

The concept of Carreras & Friends draws parallels to the celebrated Pavarotti & Friends charity concerts, spearheaded by Carreras’s fellow Three Tenors artist, Luciano Pavarotti. While those iconic shows featured global superstars, Brisbane’s iteration offers a unique blend of established international acts and rising Australian talent.

For Australian performer Mark Vincent, the opportunity is deeply personal. “It’s personal for me,” Vincent shared. “My grandfather, may he rest in peace, said to me this day would come, and I never believed him. I used to sit at home watching the DVD of the Three Tenors; it was like religion. I studied the voices of José, Luciano [Pavarotti], and Plácido Domingo, and he said to me and my grandmother, ‘One day you’ll be up there with those incredible artists.’ To think that one of those dreams has come true to perform with José Carreras, I’m honestly so grateful.”

Brisbane band Sheppard, also part of the line-up, described the invitation as a surreal experience. “It’s a pinch-yourself moment where you get the call-up to be amongst some of these legendary icons,” said vocalist and keyboardist Amy Sheppard. “I think 10-year-old Amy would be pinching herself up there with The Corrs, and Darren Hayes of Savage Garden has really inspired our music, so it’s a dream gig for us.”

Frontman George Sheppard hinted at potential cross-genre collaborations, humorously suggesting, “Let’s see if we can get José singing Geronimo.”

Carreras & Friends is scheduled to take place at The Gabba on Saturday, December 5.
