Racer Juha Miettinen Dies in Nurburgring Seven-Car Crash

Published on

A 66-year-old racing driver lost his life in a devastating seven-car collision during the first qualifying race for the Nürburgring 24 Hours on April 18, 2026. Juha Miettinen crashed approximately 25 minutes into the four-hour event at the challenging Karussell section of the Nordschleife circuit.

Details of the Fatal Incident

The accident prompted race officials to immediately halt proceedings and issue a red flag for rescue operations. Emergency teams arrived swiftly, but Miettinen could not be saved despite extensive resuscitation efforts at the medical center. The six other drivers involved sustained injuries that do not pose life-threatening risks.

Race control confirmed: “During the first race of the ADAC 24h Nürburgring Qualifiers, a serious accident involving seven competitors occurred in the early stages. Following the collision between several vehicles, race control immediately halted the race to allow for extensive recovery and rescue operations. Despite the immediate arrival of emergency services, the emergency medics were unable to save the driver involved, Juha Miettinen (BMW 325i, #121), after he had been extracted from the vehicle; the driver died at the Medical Centre after all attempts at resuscitation proved unsuccessful.”

Verstappen’s Tribute

Formula One star Max Verstappen, who competed in the same event for Mercedes alongside teammate Lucas Auer without incident, expressed his shock on Instagram. “Shocked by what happened today,” Verstappen posted. “Motorsport is something we all love, but in times like this it is a reminder of how dangerous it can be. Sending my heartfelt condolences to Juha’s family and loved ones.”

Final Post and Tributes

Hours before the tragedy, Miettinen and his co-driver Dan Berghult shared their enthusiasm on social media. Berghult captioned a joint post: “Ready for the N24H Qually races. Two races in two days. The first one into the night. The second one way too early in the morning, just so you get a taste of that Nürburgring 24H race feeling…”

Friends and fellow enthusiasts paid heartfelt tributes online. One longtime acquaintance shared on X: “I’ve known Juha for 20 years, each one of them filled to the brim with him enjoying driving the Nurburgring, one of those guys that never seemed to be able to get enough of the place and was always there with a smile. RIP my friend.”

Another mourned: “Juha Miettinen has left us at 66 years old following a terrible accident this evening. A regular at the NLS and the Nürburgring as a gentleman driver for years, the entire motorsport family is in mourning. He departed while living his passion: this sport so beautiful, yet so dangerous.”

Nürburgring’s Dangerous Legacy

Known as the “Green Hell” by racing legend Jackie Stewart, the Nürburgring Nordschleife stands as one of motorsport’s most iconic yet perilous tracks. Since 1928, it has claimed 70 lives in official races. Public sessions see an estimated three to 12 fatalities annually, accessible to anyone with a vehicle, license, and modest fee.
