Julian Alvarez’s Arsenal Move: A Barcelona Rejection and a £130m Transfer Saga

Published on

Striker Julian Alvarez finds himself in a precarious position with Atletico Madrid, as a hostile reception from fans and a stalled move to Barcelona could potentially open the door for a transfer to Arsenal. The Argentine international’s desire to join Barcelona has been met with significant resistance from Atletico, creating an unsustainable situation that may force a resolution in the coming days.

Fan Backlash and Stalled Barcelona Move

Alvarez reportedly left Atletico Madrid’s match on Sunday deeply unsettled by the intense hostility he faced from the club’s supporters. Despite anticipating a difficult welcome after publicly expressing his dream of playing for Barcelona during the World Cup, the scale of the reaction reportedly shocked him. Whistles and jeers greeted him before and during his second-half substitute appearance. The situation escalated when, instead of joining his teammates to acknowledge the fans after the game, Alvarez walked alone down the tunnel, stepping over an Atletico scarf thrown his way. This incident has been widely interpreted as a sign of an irreparable rift between the player and the club.

His primary objective remains a move to Barcelona, but Atletico Madrid has adamantly refused to negotiate with their La Liga rivals. This stance, coupled with Barcelona’s financial limitations, has made a deal exceedingly difficult. Barcelona’s initial offer of approximately £77 million plus add-ons, made two months ago, was dismissed by Atletico as insufficient. While Barcelona might consider a second offer, they are unlikely to meet Atletico’s valuation, reported to be around £130 million. Furthermore, Atletico’s determination not to sell to Barcelona is unwavering, leading them to report the Catalan club to FIFA over alleged improper conduct during previous transfer negotiations.

Arsenal’s Interest and Potential Deal Structures

With the Barcelona move appearing increasingly unlikely, Arsenal has emerged as a potential destination. The North London club has long been an admirer of Alvarez. However, Arsenal is understood to have some reservations, partly due to the player’s strong public desire to join Barcelona. The club may also be cautious about acquiring a player who has openly sought a transfer.

Atletico Madrid’s sporting director, Andrea Berta, who previously held a similar role at Atletico, met with his Arsenal counterpart in London recently. This meeting, ostensibly to discuss other transfer targets, could have included discussions about Alvarez. Berta’s existing connections within Atletico might facilitate negotiations and help structure a potential deal.

To satisfy Atletico manager Diego Simeone’s demand for a high-caliber replacement, the inclusion of striker Viktor Gyokeres in any transfer agreement has been suggested. While Gyokeres might not be Simeone’s first choice under normal circumstances, he could be a viable option in a high-pressure scenario. The possibility of Chelsea emerging as a surprise suitor for Alvarez cannot be entirely ruled out, especially given Simeone’s reported admiration for Nicolas Jackson, whom Atletico had previously pursued.

Player’s Perspective and Contractual Situation

Alvarez’s desire to leave Atletico stems from a perceived mismatch between his playing style and the club’s tactical approach. He communicated his unhappiness to the club at the end of last year, expressing his belief that a transfer was necessary to fulfill his ambitions. Atletico claims they initially assured him of their commitment to building the team around him but later indicated they would not keep him against his will, provided a suitable offer was made through the correct channels, without disrupting the current season.

However, Alvarez’s camp and Atletico have differing accounts of events. Atletico alleges that conversations between Alvarez’s agent and Barcelona occurred during the season, particularly around their encounters in domestic and European competitions. This has fueled the animosity, leading to public statements from both sides, including Atletico’s CEO criticizing Alvarez’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, as being ‘badly advised,’ and Hidalgo retorting on social media.

Alvarez’s current contract with Atletico runs until 2030, with weekly wages reportedly around £220,000. Arsenal has demonstrated a willingness to meet significant wage demands for other players, such as Vinicius Junior and Bukayo Saka, suggesting financial capability is not the primary obstacle for them.

Precedent and Future Outlook

The situation draws parallels to the departure of Sergio Aguero in 2011. Aguero also wished to move to Real Madrid, but Atletico, determined to prevent him from joining a direct rival, sold him to Manchester City for £42 million. While Atletico’s resolve then was significant, their current refusal to negotiate with Barcelona over Alvarez appears even more resolute.

The coming days will be crucial in determining Alvarez’s future. The escalating animosity between the player and Atletico Madrid, combined with the collapse of his preferred Barcelona move, could make Arsenal his only viable escape route from an increasingly untenable situation. Whether Arsenal will fully commit to a deal, especially given their own potential reservations, remains to be seen.

Alvarez’s performance in pre-season and his brief appearance on Sunday have been described as lackluster, further complicating his transfer prospects. The club’s management has expressed concerns about signing a player who has made his desire to leave so apparent.
