Kaila Proctor: Rising Aussie Basketball Star Surpasses Brother’s Early Talent

Published on

Tyrese Proctor stands out as a once-in-a-generation Australian basketball talent. The 21-year-old Sydney native recently transitioned from the elite Duke University program directly into the NBA draft, securing a multimillion-dollar contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Yet, discovering such promise from a local Sydney club proves less unique than expected. His father and former coach, Roderick Proctor, views Tyrese as merely the first in a family lineage poised for international success.

The Proctor Family’s Drive for Excellence

Roderick Proctor arrived early at the Bankstown Basketball Stadium on a recent Wednesday morning. Though he preferred staying in bed, his 17-year-old daughter Kaila pulled him onto the court for a workout. Kaila recently earned her second scholarship offer from a U.S. university, marking her as the third family member—following her father and brother—to attract such opportunities.

“With Tyrese, I recognized the potential but couldn’t predict how far it would lead,” Roderick explained. “For Kaila, the potential stands out even more clearly; in several skills, she surpasses him at the same age.”

Inside the stadium, Roderick and Kaila execute drills and one-on-one matchups. This regimen has persisted for years, including through her high school exams and even outdoors during the COVID-19 shutdowns of indoor facilities.

“We trained outside in scorching heat on uneven ground near a tennis court,” Kaila recalled. “It wasn’t a proper basketball surface. The sun blinded us, and I’d struggle to shoot while Dad questioned why I missed. You couldn’t even spot the rim.”

From Local Roots to Global Ambitions

Roderick’s basketball journey—from competing at Mississippi College to joining the Bankstown Bruins in the NBL1—naturally evolved into coaching Tyrese’s under-12 team. Family dynamics reveal the intensity of their training.

“You could tell a session’s quality by Kaila’s expression when she got home—if she smiled or headed straight to her room,” her mother, Melissa, noted. “She says Dad pushes her hardest. Tyrese echoed the same sentiment, claiming he’s lenient with others but strict with them.”

Despite the tough coaching, Kaila motivates Roderick to train. Witnessing Tyrese’s path firsthand, including U.S. college tours, fuels her determination.

“I see his work ethic up close,” Kaila said. “He’s achieved so much through dedication; it motivates me to push further and envision my own possibilities.”

During sessions, Roderick highlights Kaila’s long arms and large hands as key assets. These traits once caused her insecurity about her height for professional play.

“Until about a year ago, Kaila seemed like the little sister to everyone,” Melissa shared. “She stayed small for so long, then suddenly grew, much like I did.”

Achievements and Future Horizons

Last year, Kaila earned a spot on Australia’s under-17 national team, competing in Samoa, Singapore, and the U.S. She now navigates offers from two American universities while discussing options with more.

“I’m incredibly proud; she bloomed late and missed some state teams she deserved,” Roderick said. “We never interfered as parents.”

Kaila plans a U.S. college tour in March. Her long-term goals include professional play in Europe or the WNBA. Success could see her join Tyrese in Cleveland when the WNBA expands there in 2028.

A family bet adds a lighthearted note. Melissa promised Tyrese a tattoo of his jersey number if he reached the NBA—a pledge she fulfilled despite her fear of needles.

“We made the bet when he was 10,” Tyrese recounted in August. “After hers for me, Kaila started negotiating her own.”
