Feline Heiress Reportedly Receives Nothing from Designer’s Fortune
Choupette, the beloved Birman cat of the late fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld, is reportedly living without any of the substantial inheritance once believed to be designated for her. Despite Lagerfeld’s immense wealth and well-publicized affection for his feline companion, claims have emerged that Choupette has received “absolutely nothing” from the designer’s estate.
Millions Allegedly Designated for Feline Luxury
Following Lagerfeld’s passing in 2019, widespread speculation suggested that Choupette was set to become one of the world’s wealthiest animals. Reports indicated that the cat was in line to inherit sums as high as £150 million. Furthermore, it was understood that the visionary behind Chanel had also set aside an additional £1.5 million specifically for Choupette, intended to ensure her continued life of opulence.
Caretaker Cites Legal Battles for Funds
Choupette was placed under the care of the designer’s former housekeeper, Françoise Caçote, who had served as the cat’s primary attendant and caretaker. Caçote has now revealed that despite the considerable sums reportedly allocated, she has received no funds. She stated in an email interview that she has been compelled to engage expensive legal representation to claim the inheritance in her own name and to ensure that Lagerfeld’s directives are honored.
Prioritizing Choupette’s Well-being
“While things are being sorted out, I’m doing my best to honor his wishes, especially that Choupette wants for nothing,” Caçote explained. “That’s my top priority.” She added that in addition to caring for Choupette, she works part-time to support the cat. Caçote emphasized that Choupette receives all the necessary love, attention, and care, and that her happiness, affection, and protection are paramount, as Karl Lagerfeld would have desired.
Caçote expressed hope for a peaceful resolution to the situation. She also acknowledged feeling apprehensive about potential judgment regarding her efforts but maintained that Choupette’s contentment at home is the most crucial aspect. At the time of the interview, Choupette was reportedly enjoying a quiet nap.
A Fashionable Feline’s Origin Story
Lagerfeld welcomed Choupette into his life in August 2011. The cat initially belonged to model Baptiste Giabiconi, but Lagerfeld agreed to cat-sit while Giabiconi was traveling. Upon Giabiconi’s return, Lagerfeld confessed he had fallen deeply in love with Choupette and could not part with her. The designer famously remarked in 2013 that if it were legally permissible, he would marry the blue-eyed cat, expressing his surprise at falling so deeply in love with an animal.
