WA Town Celebrates Multiculturalism Amidst National Debate

Katanning Residents Defend Multiculturalism Following National Monoculture Proposal

Leaders in the regional Western Australian town of Katanning are affirming their community’s deep-rooted multicultural identity, responding to recent suggestions that Australia should embrace a monoculture. The debate was ignited by comments made by a prominent national political figure during an address last week.

Imam Expresses Confusion Over Monoculture Stance

Imam Alep Mydie, a long-time resident of Katanning, expressed bewilderment rather than concern upon hearing the proposal for a monocultural Australia. “Multiculturalism has existed in Katanning, the place I call home, for longer than I have been here,” Imam Mydie stated, reflecting on his 56 years in the town. He recalled that upon his family’s arrival from Christmas Island, they were supported by established European communities.

The national political figure, Senator Pauline Hanson, reportedly described the policy of multiculturalism in Australia as “utterly flawed” during her address to the National Press Gallery. She articulated a view that while the nation is multiracial, it ought to be monocultural.

Katanning: A Hub of Diversity

Katanning, situated approximately 300 kilometers south of Perth, is a farming community of about 4,000 people, with residents originating from over 40 different nationalities. Imam Mydie extended an invitation for dialogue with Senator Hanson, stating, “I would like to sit with Ms. Hanson and talk to anybody who has the view of that ideology.” He asserted his Australian identity, asking, “Am I not Australian? Yes, I am.” He further emphasized the benefits of multiculturalism, highlighting the “sharing of knowledge” and the support received from Italian, Greek, and other European residents who were present in Katanning before his arrival.

Community Pride in Diversity

The town’s commitment to its diverse population is visibly celebrated, with a display of flags in its main street and an annual Harmony Festival. Shire president Kristy D’Aprile underscored the community’s pride in its cohesive environment, where various faiths, cultures, and beliefs coexist. “Katanning certainly is very proud of who we are and how our many different cultures work together to form a solid community,” D’Aprile said. She added that Katanning has a “very long history of being a welcoming place for new Australians.”

Economic Strength Through Diversity

The local abattoir has been a significant factor in attracting a diverse workforce, drawing individuals from Christmas and Cocos (Keeling) Islands, as well as Afghanistan, Myanmar, and China. D’Aprile noted that multiculturalism has been instrumental in strengthening the town’s economy. “We have a workforce that has been built around many different cultures filling critical roles within our community,” she explained. “We are multicultural at our core, and we need that to continue for our sustainability.”

National Perspective on Difference

Federal Multicultural Affairs Minister Anne Aly commented that the remarks about a monoculture serve to denigrate difference. “Difference is actually something that is good; it’s good economically, it’s good socially, it’s good for the nation,” Dr. Aly stated. She pointed out that diversity is not a new phenomenon in Australia, noting that even First Nations peoples possessed distinct cultural practices and languages.

Dr. Aly asserted that the concept of a monoculture is not a realistic reflection of society. “Even within family units, there are different practices of culture,” she observed.

Conversely, One Nation WA leader Rod Caddies framed Senator Hanson’s monoculture concept as a message of unity. “If you accept Australia as your home, you accept Australia has a culture and you contribute to that culture,” Caddies said. He argued for a single, overarching culture based on shared beliefs, values, and behaviors as essential for national stability. Regarding the economic reliance on a diverse workforce, Mr. Caddies suggested that the underlying point was being missed, stating, “Cultural differences do not play a part in our workforce. [Multicultural workers] are Australian; they are a part of the workforce as Australians, not as a different culture.”
