Kelly Ripa Jokes About Craving Solitude on Mother’s Day

Published on

Kelly Ripa, a dedicated mother to her three children—Michael, Lola, and Joaquin—cherishes her occasional alone time, particularly on Mother’s Day. During the May 8 episode of LIVE, she and her husband, Mark Consuelos, focused the show on celebrating mothers.

A Memorable Mother’s Day Isolation

Ripa recounted a humorous incident from four years ago when she contracted COVID-19 just before Mother’s Day. After her kids asked what she wanted for the holiday, she jokingly replied, “I wanna be left completely alone.”

“You remember when I got COVID on Mother’s Day like four years ago?” she asked Consuelos. “The kids were saying, ‘What do you want for Mother’s Day?’ and I jokingly said, ‘I wanna be left completely alone.’ And then I got COVID the day before Mother’s Day and I was totally alone. And I was like, ‘This was not what I had in mind.’ However, it was a lot of solitude.”

Airplane Solitude This Year

For this Mother’s Day, Ripa anticipates another form of seclusion. “This year I’m going to be on an airplane for Mother’s Day, so I will once again be in solitude,” she shared. “Well, not in solitude. I’ll be with 300 other people, but none of them will be asking me to make them breakfast. So that will be nice.”

Why Calling Mom Beats Texting

The couple emphasized the importance of calling mothers over sending texts. “Key reasons why you should call your mom—well, because it’s the right thing to do,” Consuelos stated. “Speaking beats texting. So don’t just text.”

He referenced research showing that texting mothers produced salivary cortisol levels similar to those who had no contact at all. “Hearing your mom’s voice has a uniquely soothing effect, so the next time you are stressed out by schoolwork, family or friends, call your mother,” Consuelos added.

Moms’ Secret Mother’s Day Dream

Ripa revealed a common maternal fantasy. “People are in disbelief about how many mothers dream—literally daydream—about being hospitalized for Mother’s Day,” she explained. “Just for the peace and quiet. To have a simple day of hospitalization.”

Special Show Tribute to Moms

LIVE‘s executive producer, Michael Gelman, highlighted a fan-favorite tradition. “Just like people do Christmas credits, which we always have a lot of fun with, we do a special Mother’s Day credits, where everyone sends in photos,” he shared. “So they get to be a part of honoring their moms and be seen and be heard on the show, which is always nice. Our show has always been very family-oriented, very mom-oriented.”
