Ripa recounted the experience during a past interview, describing the atmosphere at the studio where she was working. “Our first guest for the day was Joan Rivers, and she was sobbing. She was just sobbing,” Ripa recalled. “And we just stood around and watched all of this chaos unfolding before our eyes.” The gravity of the situation became intensely personal when her husband, Mark Consuelos, arrived at the studio.

Consuelos had just taken their son, Michael, to his first day of nursery school. He had come to the studio to show Ripa pictures he had taken of Michael’s milestone. It was at that moment, upon entering the studio, that he first saw the unfolding news reports. “That was the first time he saw the images when he when walked through the door and I was standing there with the baby,” Ripa said, referring to their then-infant daughter, Lola. “And I remember all of us just being spellbound and horrified by what we were seeing.”

The immediate vicinity of the newsroom, located within a building, presented a disturbing paradox. “We were in a news building and you think if this is what what it is, what it appears to be, if this is it, what’s next? The news, what next? So you wanted to leave, but you didn’t want to be outside,” Ripa explained, capturing the collective anxiety and uncertainty of the moment.

Navigating Fear and Uncertainty

As the day progressed, rumors and frightening reports circulated, amplifying the sense of dread. “There were rumors flying everywhere, people were talking about they’re going bomb central park and they’re going to blow up this and you would hear these things on the streets,” Ripa stated. The immediate impulse was to protect their children.

Driven by a desperate need for safety and proximity to their son, Ripa and Consuelos made the decision to retrieve Michael from nursery school. “I remember coming home, I didn’t know I was sort of desperate, we went and got our son from nursery school and he had been there all of 10 minutes,” she said. With their three-month-old daughter in tow, they began the walk home, but the usual comfort of their building seemed distant.

The family hesitated to enter their high-rise apartment building due to the pervasive fear of further attacks. “We didn’t want to go into our building because it was a high-rise,” Ripa explained. Yet, the alternative of being outside also felt untenable. “But we didn’t want to be outside because we had heard that they were going to bomb everything and everywhere and we didn’t know who they were, we didn’t know what it was, but it was something really bad.”

A Glimpse of the Unthinkable

The family sought refuge and information by listening to the news. Reports of missing planes and the attack on the Pentagon painted a grim picture. Initially, Ripa struggled to process the intentionality of the attacks. “I just thought, in my mind I still thought there must be something wrong with the airport, there must be some sort of technological glitch, there must be a computer problem that is causing this because the thought that human beings could do this to other human beings was beyond my comprehension,” she admitted.

The horrifying reality became undeniable when they ascended to the roof of their building. “We walked up to the top of our building on the roof and we looked downtown and that’s when we saw everything start to fall down,” Ripa recounted, her voice conveying the profound shock of witnessing the World Trade Center towers collapse.
