Emmerdale Star Kelvin Fletcher Hit by Oat Harvest Setback

Published on

Kelvin Fletcher encounters a major disappointment on the latest episode of Fletcher’s Family Farm, returning this Sunday. The former Emmerdale actor and his wife Liz manage their Cheshire farm, where they recently expanded into arable farming to grow porridge oats.

Oat Harvest Falls Short

The duo analyzed their first oat harvest to check suitability for human consumption. Despite high hopes, millers determined the grains failed to meet standards.

“Of all the new ventures on the farm, our first foray into arable farming has been one of the most exciting,” a voiceover notes. “This farm did produce crops in the past, but nothing has grown here for the last 20 years until now.”

Kelvin heads to the mill with optimism. “There’s a lot riding on this,” he says. “We were bold enough to try it and even braver to aim for porridge oats. It’s nerve-racking, but this is just the beginning of our arable journey. Regardless of the result, we will not be deterred.”

Managing Director James inspects the batch and observes, “This is not a promising start. They look well, but they haven’t absorbed enough moisture to swell properly for porridge groats.” He attributes the issue to the long, hot, dry summer, which limited rain during key growth stages.

James delivers the verdict: “Unfortunately, it’s not going to make the grade for porridge. But there’s still nutritional value here for other uses.”

Kelvin stays positive. “I still feel optimistic,” he tells the camera. “A little disappointed we didn’t make the grade, but now I understand what it takes. We grew a great crop; it just lacked the umph.”

Joyful News for the Family

Amid the setback, Liz receives uplifting news during a vet visit. Their dog Ginger carries a litter of puppies. Vet Hugo confirms after examining her belly.

“Hugo, I think that is the best news you’ve ever given me,” Liz exclaims. When he jokes, “Better than the cows?” she replies, “Well, it is a close one, but she is just our baby. Oh my god, you are having pups.”

Upcoming Episode Highlights

Series four kicks off with Liz and Kelvin planning to double their flock and herd sizes. They hire local farmhand Josh to manage livestock. Marnie meets her new Jacobs sheep for the farming year ahead. The boys take a break from tractors for motorbikes, and the family gains approval to rebuild the farmhouse.

Fletcher’s Family Farm airs on ITV this Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
