King Charles and William Teased Teen Harry on 1998 Ski Trip, Lip Reader Reveals

Published on

A lip reader has analyzed footage from a 1998 family ski trip to Whistler, Canada, revealing playful teasing from King Charles and Prince William toward a teenage Prince Harry. The incident, captured on video, shows early glimpses of brotherly banter nearly three decades before public tensions surfaced.

Playful Banter on the Slopes

During the March 1998 mini royal tour, just seven months after Princess Diana’s death, King Charles, then Prince of Wales, took Princes William and Harry to the Rocky Mountain resort for some private bonding time. Before hitting the slopes, the family spent a day in Vancouver, where 15-year-old William faced enthusiastic crowds.

In the footage, 13-year-old Harry, posing for cameras on a ski lift while wearing a baseball cap in freezing conditions, complained, “I’m so cold.”

Lip reader Nicola Hickling interpreted the exchange as follows: King Charles turned to William and remarked, “He has no sense. Of course it’s bloody cold. We’re in the snow.” William replied, “Didn’t he bring a spare hat?”

Charles responded, “He wanted to wear that cap. I told him he was mad and that it’s very cold. He doesn’t make it easy for himself.” William added, “Let him crack on. He will learn. He will probably get frostbite,” to which Charles said, “Perhaps.”

Actress Nina Wadia commented on the human side of the royals: “The royal family are just human beings, and this is the perfect example. Style matters more than practicality to a teenage boy wearing a baseball cap on a ski lift while complaining about the cold.”

Former royal butler Grant Howard noted, “The King aimed to create fun family moments and enjoy their company, even if this conversation didn’t go perfectly.”

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s Biscuit Spat

The same lip-reading analysis uncovers a light-hearted exchange between the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip during a 2004 state visit to France. While watching a cavalry display by the elite Cadre Noir in Paris, the Queen rummaged through her handbag.

Lip reader Khalil Anwar claims she told Philip, “I have mints in here.” After his off-camera reply, she snapped, “Yes, I have biscuits.” Philip responded, “I only asked, and you are being in a mood with me today. I would like this to be a nice day.”

The Queen reportedly diffused the tension: “Let’s stop this now. Of course I don’t want you to suffer.”

Royal commentator Ingrid Seward described it as “delightful,” adding, “Philip and the Queen bickered often, but here the boot is on the other foot. We usually hear of Philip being rude, yet the Queen snaps at him.”

Nina Wadia called it “hugely entertaining,” saying, “This is everyday real life—they’re normal.” Grant Howard remarked, “Everyone wonders about the Queen’s handbag; it was like a walking buffet!”
