Virat Kohli has been lauded as the pivotal “heartbeat” of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru squad following his match-winning unbeaten 75, which clinched their second consecutive Indian Premier League championship. The veteran batsman was at the crease as Bengaluru successfully chased a target of 156, defeating the Gujarat Titans by five wickets in the final held in Ahmedabad.

Known for his exceptional performance in run chases, Kohli concluded the T20 tournament with an impressive 675 runs. Head coach Andy Flower, in a video tribute released by Royal Challengers Bengaluru, acknowledged Kohli’s significant influence. “Virat, I know you get a lot of attention and quite rightly,” Flower stated. “But I don’t want to downplay that, because you are a heartbeat in this dressing room.”
Kohli set the tone early, contributing to a rapid 62-run opening partnership with Venkatesh Iyer. He then expertly anchored the chase, notably striking Gujarat pace bowler Kagiso Rabada for two boundaries and a six, establishing dominance for his team at the expansive Narendra Modi Stadium, which was filled with his fervent supporters.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar commented on Kohli’s composure, telling Sports Today, “He relishes these situations, he looks forward to these situations where he can show how good a player he is. What kind of a temperament he has, the winning mindset that he has.”
IPL chairman Arun Dhumal offered a unique perspective on Kohli’s value, stating, “Virat doesn’t need any trophies. He is a trophy himself.”

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Kohli have been on a remarkable winning streak in the T20 tournament since securing their maiden IPL title last year on their 18th attempt. The team finished atop the 10-team league stage standings and secured a direct entry into the final by defeating Gujarat in the first play-off match.
The immense popularity of Kohli was evident, with a significant portion of the 90,000 spectators in attendance seen wearing his iconic number 18 shirt, and chants of “Kohli, Kohli” echoing through the stadium. “I always say we don’t have seven home games, we probably have 14,” Kohli remarked after being named player of the match. “Everywhere we go, we have fans cheering the team and really getting behind us. I mean, GT are probably the home side, but you see 90 percent of the guys are RCB fans. Their support is priceless.”
Trophy Dedication Amidst Security Concerns
The team has opted against staging a public homecoming celebration with the trophy on Monday. A similar victory parade following their inaugural title win a year ago resulted in a tragic stampede outside Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, which led to 11 fatalities.
Reflecting on the emotional victory and the team’s connection with their supporters, Bengaluru captain Rajat Patidar stated, “Obviously, you feel bad — you lost your fans after winning the game. Not just fans, they are the family members. I always want to dedicate this trophy to them. I don’t have words to express that feeling.”
