Guilty Verdict in Fentanyl Murder Case

A 35-year-old mother of three, Kouri Richins, stands convicted of murdering her husband, Eric Richins, by lacing his cocktail with five times the lethal dose of fentanyl in their Park City, Utah, family home. The jury reached unanimous guilty verdicts on all charges after deliberating for less than three hours.

Motive Tied to Debt and Inheritance

Richins faced severe financial debts and anticipated inheriting her husband’s estate, valued at over $4 million. Prosecutors revealed she had secretly opened multiple life insurance policies on Eric totaling about $2 million without his knowledge. She also stands convicted of fraudulently claiming insurance benefits after his death in March 2022.

Book Promotion as Cover-Up Alleged

Following the killing, Richins self-published the children’s book Are You with Me? to help her sons and others cope with parental loss. She actively promoted it on TV and radio, which prosecutors argued demonstrated premeditation and an attempt to conceal the crime.

Prior Attempted Poisoning

Authorities detailed an earlier attempted murder on Valentine’s Day, when Richins allegedly served her husband a fentanyl-laced sandwich. Eric suffered hives and blacked out but survived the incident.

“She wanted to leave Eric Richins but did not want to leave his money,” stated prosecutor Brad Bloodworth.

Prosecutors further contended Richins was involved with another man and envisioned a future without her husband.

Defense Claims Rejected

Richins’ legal team argued Eric struggled with painkiller addiction and had requested opioids from her. However, Richins herself informed police in a video that her husband had no history of illicit drug use. She denied all charges throughout the trial.

The proceedings concluded abruptly after three weeks when Richins waived her right to testify and her attorneys rested without calling witnesses, confident the prosecution lacked sufficient evidence.

Sentencing Ahead

Richins, an estate agent and author, faces felony convictions including murder and attempted murder. Sentencing is scheduled for May 13 at the Park City court.
