Kylie Minogue headlines the AFL Grand Final 2026 pre-game entertainment at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in September. The Melbourne-born pop star, aged 57, returns home for this marquee event on Australia’s premier sporting day.
Minogue’s Excitement for the Performance
“The AFL Grand Final at Melbourne’s one and only, forever iconic MCG? Yes please!” Minogue stated. “As a Melburnian, I’m so excited to be coming home for the biggest day in the Aussie sporting calendar. I’ll not only be performing, but I’ll be one of 100,000 fans at the ‘G, watching the wonder that is footy.”
High-Profile Lineups in Recent Years
This announcement continues a trend of star-studded pre-game shows. Snoop Dogg led the 2025 entertainment, joined by Australian artists Tash Sultana and Baker Boy. In 2024, Katy Perry topped the bill alongside Tina Arena, Cody Simpson, and Christine Anu.
Grand Final Start Time Stays Traditional
Speculation about shifting the traditional 2:30 p.m. start to a 5 p.m. twilight slot has ended. AFL Commission chair Craig Drummond confirms the afternoon timeslot remains for 2026 and 2027 grand finals. “There is no compelling case to stage a twilight or night grand final this season,” he stated.
Drummond emphasized providing certainty to fans and clubs. “Everyone who loves footy has a view on the right start time for our biggest game of the year, and for at least the next two seasons it will remain in its traditional afternoon timeslot at the MCG,” he added. “The Commission agreed it was important to provide fans and clubs with certainty now, while also allowing the AFL to continue to plan on our 19th club entering the competition in two years’ time.”
AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon noted the decision offers stability for all stakeholders over the next two seasons. The league has held only two grand finals under lights—at the Gabba in 2020 and Optus Stadium in 2021—due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Officials plan to evaluate later start times amid broader competition reviews.
