A gripping new six-part drama titled Last Resort is set to captivate audiences with a star-studded cast and a dark, twist-filled narrative. The series, announced by Channel 5, features acclaimed actors Jason Watkins, known for his role in Line of Duty, and Tessa Peake-Jones, recognized from Grantchester.

Described as a “deceptively dark tale of village life,” Last Resort plunges a group of friends into the sinister underbelly of a seemingly idyllic seaside village. The plot is set in motion by a tragedy, which propels the characters on a relentless hunt for a killer.

The script is a collaborative effort from lead writer Matthew Thomas, whose previous work includes Missed Call and Marcella, alongside David Turpin (The Ex-Wife, Girl Taken) and Rebecca Wojciechowski (The Teacher, Silent Witness). This talented writing team suggests viewers can anticipate a journey packed with unexpected turns.

Uncovering a Sinister Secret

The drama centers on Gail, a retired librarian, her sister Joy, who is living with early-stage dementia, and their old friends Dee and Charlie. What begins as a planned holiday, intended as a bucket list trip for Joy, takes a dramatic turn when tragedy strikes the picturesque coastal town. Authorities are quick to dismiss the incident as an accident, but the friends are convinced it is murder and embark on their own investigation.

Their pursuit of the truth is aided by Joy’s daughter, Kate. As the investigation deepens, old crimes resurface, and disturbing patterns emerge. The friends discover that the tranquil resort town, with its scenic walks, cozy pubs, and lighthearted banter, harbors a far more sinister reality. They must work together to unravel a devastating mystery and identify a killer who has been operating within this tight-knit community and beyond.

Caroline Quentin, who portrays Gail, has expressed enthusiasm for the project, calling it “one to watch.” She remarked in a statement, “Matthew Thomas has created something moving, funny and terrifying. It’s quite a ride!”

Sebastian Cardwell, Deputy Chief Content Officer for Channel 5, also teased the series, promising viewers “plenty of twists and turns.”
