LeBron James experienced a momentary concern during the Los Angeles Lakers’ playoff opener against the Houston Rockets on Saturday night. In the first quarter of Game 1, James intercepted a pass from Jabari Smith Jr. near the sideline, intended for Alperen Sengun. The deflected ball struck a young girl seated courtside on an adult’s lap.
James immediately approached the child to ensure she was unharmed. A woman holding the girl assured the NBA star that she was fine, allowing James to return to the court.
Lakers Eye Deeper Playoff Run
The Lakers seek to advance beyond the first round for the first time since 2023, despite qualifying for the postseason in each of the past three years. Since their 2020 NBA Championship in the COVID-affected bubble, LeBron James and his teammates have progressed past the opening round only once, reaching the Western Conference Finals in 2022-23.
Father-Son Milestone in Playoffs
This playoff journey holds extra significance for James, who shares the court with his son, Bronny James. The duo made history last season as the first father-son pair to play together in the NBA. This year, they achieved meaningful minutes and the league’s first father-to-son assist.
Bronny appeared in the game against the Rockets, adding to the family’s legacy. “It’s insane,” Bronny said about playing alongside his father in the playoffs. “I’ve literally watched his whole career. Now I’m a part of it. So it’s a great experience. I’m appreciative of it—but I’m part of the job, too. So I have to do my job as well. I’ve got to lock in.”
Bronny’s minutes have grown over the past month, securing a rotation spot amid injuries to players like Austin Reaves.
James expresses clear pride in his son’s progress. “Every moment we get an opportunity to play together is something I never take for granted,” James stated. “Me being on the floor with him postseason, regular season, training camp, practices—it’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me in my career, above everything I’ve accomplished.” He added, “The fact that he’s put himself in position to get his number called for a postseason game is pretty remarkable and pretty cool, given the circumstances that he’s been through over the last couple of years. He earned it. He deserves it. He’ll be ready.”
