Lionel Messi Fined by MLS for On-Field Altercation

Published on

Major League Soccer (MLS) has imposed a financial penalty on Inter Miami star Lionel Messi following a contentious incident during the team’s 2-2 draw against the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday night. The disciplinary action stems from an off-the-ball exchange in the second half where Messi made contact with Union midfielder Quinn Sullivan.

Messi’s Confrontation with Sullivan

During the match, video evidence captured Messi engaging in a verbal dispute with Quinn Sullivan. The footage shows Messi briefly reaching out and touching the back of Sullivan’s neck. The situation quickly drew the attention of other players and officials, with Philadelphia’s Yannick Bright and match referees intervening to separate the two midfielders. Crucially, the on-field referee, Filip Dujic, did not witness the contact directly as his attention was elsewhere, and therefore no card was issued at the time of the incident, allowing play to resume without interruption.

MLS Disciplinary Committee Review

Following the match, the MLS Disciplinary Committee conducted a thorough review of the available video footage. On Friday, the committee determined that a financial fine was the appropriate sanction for Messi’s actions. The league opted not to suspend the Argentine forward, ensuring his availability for Inter Miami’s upcoming matches. The exact amount of the fine has not been publicly disclosed.

Related Incidents and Sanctions

The same chaotic stoppage-time period also saw another incident involving Inter Miami player Ian Fray. Fray received an undisclosed fine from the league for an altercation where he reportedly grabbed Quinn Sullivan by the neck following a challenge within the penalty area.

The confrontation escalated further when 16-year-old Cavan Sullivan, Quinn’s younger brother and a recent Manchester City signee, entered the fray to defend his sibling. This intervention triggered a larger scuffle involving multiple players. Initially, both Cavan Sullivan and Inter Miami’s Yannick Bright were shown straight red cards, leading to their ejection from the game and an automatic one-match suspension.

Rescinded Red Card for Cavan Sullivan

However, an independent review panel, comprising representatives from U.S. Soccer, Canada Soccer, and the Professional Referee Organization, convened on Friday. This panel unanimously voted to overturn Cavan Sullivan’s red card and subsequent suspension. Consequently, the young midfielder is now eligible to play in Philadelphia’s next fixture against Austin FC.

Messi’s Disciplinary Record in MLS

This recent fine marks the second instance of disciplinary action against Lionel Messi since his arrival in MLS in 2023. Previously, in February 2025, he was fined for an incident that occurred post-match involving New York City FC assistant coach Medhi Ballouchy.

Context of International Sanctions

The news of Messi’s fine comes amidst a backdrop of significant disciplinary actions handed out by FIFA to other international football stars. Notably, Messi’s Argentina teammate, Leandro Paredes, received a 10-match ban for his involvement in a brawl at the conclusion of the World Cup final against Spain. During that altercation, Paredes reportedly grabbed an opponent by the neck and engaged physically with another player. Teammate Nahuel Molina was also sanctioned with a seven-game ban for his role in the same incident. Additionally, Argentina’s Thiago Almada and Spain’s Gavi were each given one-match suspensions for their participation in the unsportsmanlike conduct.

Conclusion

The MLS’s decision to fine Lionel Messi, rather than suspend him, allows the star player to continue participating in league games for Inter Miami. The incident highlights the intensity that can arise during competitive matches and the subsequent review processes undertaken by the league to maintain sportsmanship and player conduct standards.
