Lisa Kudrow Reveals Feeling Like ‘Sixth Friend’ in Friends Cast

Published on

Lisa Kudrow has opened up about feeling overlooked compared to her Friends costars during the show’s peak popularity. She described being treated as an afterthought, even by parts of her own talent agency.

Overlooked Amid Massive Success

During the hit sitcom’s run from 1994 to 2004, costars Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, the late Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer landed high-profile film roles. Kudrow, however, faced limited opportunities. ‘Nobody cared about me,’ she stated. ‘There were certain parts of [my talent agency] that just referred to me as “the sixth Friend.”‘

She noted a lack of vision for her career. ‘There was no vision for me, and no expectations about the kind of career I could have,’ Kudrow explained. ‘There was just, like, “Boy, is she lucky she got on that show.”‘

Breakthrough and Early Challenges

Kudrow co-created Friends and became the first cast member to win an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 1998. Yet, offers remained scarce until her role in the 1999 comedy Analyze This, opposite Robert De Niro and Billy Crystal.

‘That’s when the agents and business people started circling, wanting to put me in romantic comedies and things,’ she recalled, though she doubted her fit for those parts, insisting she wasn’t ‘adorable’ enough.

Prior roles included indie films like 1997’s Clockwatchers with Parker Posey and Toni Collette, and a supporting part in Albert Brooks’s 1996 comedy Mother. Kudrow cherished those collaborations despite the modest projects.

Contract Negotiations Backlash

The cast united for collective bargaining before season three, securing equal pay from Warner Bros. Salaries rose from $125,000 per episode to $1 million in seasons nine and ten—a rare achievement.

Rumors positioned Kudrow as the ringleader, upsetting her agency. ‘I absolutely was not the ringleader,’ she clarified. ‘And that was reported, and it wasn’t true. My team were very angry about that. It was leaked sort of as a warning to other clients.’

Her agents stood to gain 10% commissions from the windfall but reacted negatively to the narrative.

Reflections on Phoebe and Beyond

In a discussion with Lily Tomlin, Kudrow shared that her character Phoebe Buffay differed greatly from herself initially. ‘At first, Phoebe was very, very far from me,’ she said. ‘It took a lot of work to justify the things she would say and do.’

Over time, elements of Phoebe influenced her. ‘Over the course of 10 years, a little bit of her came into me,’ Kudrow noted. She rejects the ‘ditz’ label for Phoebe, viewing her as someone not conforming to norms.

Kudrow now promotes the third and final season of HBO’s The Comeback, where she plays struggling B-list actress Valerie Cherish. The mockumentary debuted in 2005, revived in 2014, and returns after another long hiatus.
