LIV Golf Faces Collapse as Saudi Funds End After $1B Losses

Published on

Recent developments confirm the end of LIV Golf’s Saudi backing after 2026, validating earlier predictions about the league’s unsustainable model. The breakaway circuit, launched with massive financial support from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), has lost over $1 billion in three years, exposing fundamental flaws from the outset.

Diverse Motivations Behind LIV Golf’s Launch

LIV Golf emerged as a disruptive force with varying appeals to stakeholders. Saudi Arabia positioned it within broader initiatives like Vision 2030 and NEOM to enhance its global image. Former CEO Greg Norman viewed it as a continuation of his long-standing challenge to PGA Tour dominance. Players gained substantial earnings for fewer commitments, with some investing in golf’s growth while others did not.

Fans in the United States often linked it to cultural divides through its ties to Donald Trump. Elsewhere, it sparked hopes for golf’s true globalization, reaching underserved regions.

Suspension of Disbelief Crumbles

Sustaining LIV required overlooking key realities: Saudi commitment to events in places like Adelaide and Cape Town, endless PIF resources, tolerance for billion-dollar losses, and a format that could rival golf’s storied traditions. Elements like team names—Cleeks, Ripper GC, Range Goats—and features such as 54-hole shotgun starts with flashy presentations proved gimmicky and unconvincing.

These weaknesses have sequentially unraveled, starting from product shortcomings to financial exhaustion.

Uncertain Path Forward Without PIF

Current CEO Scott O’Neil and the new board seek fresh investment to extend LIV beyond 2026, but its scale will inevitably shrink. No entity matches the PIF’s funding depth or willingness to absorb losses. Top players will likely return to established tours, leaving lower-tier talent for any scaled-back version.

The PGA Tour, despite initial disruptions and its own complexities, retains logistical, structural, and historical advantages, positioning it for recovery.

Fans Bear the Brunt of LIV’s Fall

Golf enthusiasts, particularly in Australia, South Africa, and other emerging markets, suffer most. LIV Adelaide stood out with huge crowds, compelling narratives, and quality play on a premier course, hinting at untapped potential for a global tour.

LIV marketed itself as “golf, but louder,” delivering spectacle but inconsistently strong competition. The league’s loud promises now echo hollow amid its unraveling premise.
