Liverpool Edits Training Footage of Rising Star Rio Ngumoha

Liverpool has reportedly taken the unusual step of editing and even deleting footage of highly-touted young player Rio Ngumoha from their internal training videos. The move is understood to be a measure to manage the considerable hype surrounding the 17-year-old winger.

Ngumoha’s Rapid Ascent

Ngumoha has quickly emerged as one of the most exciting prospects in global football following a series of impressive performances for Liverpool during the 2025-26 season. His burgeoning talent was further recognized with a recent senior debut for England in a friendly match prior to an upcoming World Cup. The tricky left-winger, who developed through Chelsea’s youth academy before his move to Anfield, has already made a significant impact.

His transfer from Chelsea to Liverpool reportedly left the London club frustrated, as they lost a celebrated teenage talent to a direct rival. Ngumoha forced his way into manager Arne Slot’s first-team plans towards the end of the last campaign with his dynamic displays. He is anticipated to receive more game time next season under new head coach Andoni Iraola.

Managing Expectations

Even before stepping onto the Anfield pitch, Ngumoha’s potential was evident. Sources indicate that as early as age 16, his training sessions against Liverpool’s senior squad were so remarkable that his dribbling skills posed significant challenges. In an effort to temper the growing excitement around the former Chelsea academy starlet, the club has reportedly modified clips from their ‘Inside Training’ video series.

Reports suggest that Ngumoha consistently impresses against established first-team players in training. The club’s decision to edit out or delete footage of his performances is a clear strategy to control the narrative and manage expectations for the young winger. This approach underscores how highly regarded Ngumoha was in late 2024, with the club prioritizing his development amidst the intense scrutiny of English football.

Protecting a Promising Talent

The pressure associated with the spotlight in English football can profoundly impact a young player’s career. By managing the public perception, Liverpool appears to be shielding Ngumoha from undue pressure. This strategy also serves to deter rival clubs from attempting to poach the promising talent, echoing the circumstances of his own move from Chelsea.

John Terry, who previously worked with Ngumoha during his time with Chelsea’s academy coaching staff, has spoken highly of the teenager’s potential. Upon his transfer to Liverpool, Terry offered a strong endorsement, stating, “This boy is and will be a top top player.”

Slot’s Approach to Youth Development

Liverpool has a well-documented history of integrating young talent with experienced players, a philosophy championed during Jurgen Klopp’s tenure. Klopp famously relied on academy graduates like Jayden Danns, Bobby Clark, and James McConnell, who featured in the Carabao Cup final victory against Chelsea. These young players were affectionately known as ‘Klopp’s Kids’ due to the former coach’s trust in the club’s youth system.

Questions were raised about whether Arne Slot would adopt a similar approach upon succeeding Klopp. However, Slot initially indicated an openness to providing opportunities for young players. He commented, “This club will always bring good youngsters. It’s always a challenge to find the right moment, either to play them or if they’ve played quite a lot of minutes they want to make the next step in their career.”

Despite these assurances, Ngumoha’s limited starting opportunities – just five games in a challenging season for the team – suggest that Slot may have been hesitant to fully unleash the ex-Chelsea youngster sooner. Nevertheless, Ngumoha consistently stood out in his appearances, and had he been given more opportunities earlier, the team might have seen a different outcome in the previous campaign.
