Anfield Secures Future Defensive Star in Record Move
Liverpool have finalized a £60 million agreement with Rennes for teenage defender Jeremy Jacquet, beating multiple Premier League rivals to secure one of Europe’s most coveted young talents. The deal structure includes a £55 million base fee with £5 million in performance-related add-ons.
Unconventional Transfer Terms Raise Eyebrows
Contrary to typical January transfers, the 18-year-old French prospect will remain with Rennes through the current campaign before joining Liverpool’s squad for the 2026/2027 season. This arrangement allows time for Giovanni Leoni’s expected recovery from a knee injury while delaying Jacquet’s Anfield debut.
Football analyst Paul Merson ed surprise at the timeline during a television appearance: “I found it extraordinary that he’s coming in the summer. They need a center-half now to push for Champions League qualification. With that investment, you’d expect immediate impact.”
Merson added: “As a Chelsea supporter, I’m shocked he didn’t join us, though pleased Josh Acheampong remains. The financial commitment for a future arrival seems unusual given Liverpool’s current defensive needs.”
Defensive Reinforcements Remain Priority
The move follows Liverpool’s unsuccessful pursuit of Marc Guehi, who joined Manchester City earlier in the window. Reports indicate the club simultaneously pursued RB Leipzig’s Lutsharel Geertruida, currently on loan at Sunderland, but negotiations collapsed when the Championship side couldn’t secure a replacement.
Jacquet’s acquisition represents a long-term investment in Liverpool’s defensive future, with the teenage sensation already drawing comparisons to established Premier League defenders. His delayed arrival creates immediate questions about Jurgen Klopp’s plans to address this season’s top-four challenge.
